- Environmental problems in phthisiology and pulmonology.
- Application of the latest technologies in the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis
- Application of innovative methods in teaching the discipline of phthisiology.
- Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the development of tuberculosis morbidity.

RESULTS OF SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH OF THE DEPARTMENT
Based on the disclosure of the mechanism and regularities of the course of the tuberculosis process, the department developed new methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of tuberculosis.
For the first time in Ukraine, the department initiated the study of the content of immunoglobulins (IgG, IgM, IgA) in blood serum specific for mycobacteria tuberculosis using the immunoenzymatic method (V.I. Petrenko, T.V. Malinovska, O.V. Stopolyansky, Yu.A. Varchenko, 2003, 2015), which allowed to expand knowledge about the pathogenetic mechanisms of the development of tuberculosis infection and improve diagnostics and improve the quality of control over the effectiveness of treatment of patients with tuberculosis.
The content of JgE was studied. Its determination made it possible to conduct differential diagnostics of tuberculosis infection in children with allergic reactions of non-tuberculous etiology at the modern level.
The determination of monoclonal antibodies, apoptosis, cytokines allowed to predict the clinical course of tuberculosis and apply timely individual correction of antimycobacterial and immunocorrective therapy.
The Department of Phthisiology and Pulmonology of the Bogomolets National Medical University has introduced a method of ultrasound diagnostics (including Dopplerography of the hepatobiliary system) for differential diagnosis of hepatotoxic and cholestatic variants of the side effects of antituberculosis drugs, which makes it possible to carry out timely and effective correction of antimycobacterial therapy.
The amino acid composition of blood in patients with newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis is being studied using ion-exchange liquid column chromatography using an automatic analyzer (V.I. Petrenko, I.O. Galan, 2005, 2018), and the composition of fatty acids and nitric oxide metabolites in blood in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (affected and unaffected by the consequences of the Chernobyl accident) is being studied (O.B.
Pikas, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2019).
The department’s employees have invented methods for diagnosing tuberculosis, assessing the severity of its course, and predicting treatment (V.I. Petrenko, O.B. Pikas, 2005, 2006).
Methods for assessing the degree of risk and predicting the development of bronchopulmonary diseases (BLD) have been invented (V.I. Petrenko, O.B. Pikas, 2005) and assessing violations of the body’s adaptive capabilities (V.I. Petrenko, O.B. Pikas, 2005).
An algorithm for assessing the risk of the spread of infection in a focus after the detection of the first case (index patient) has been developed. Molecular genetic methods have been used to track the spread of infection (V.I. Petrenko, M.G. Dolynska, 2019).
Taking into account the risk of prolonged contagiousness of a tuberculosis patient (due to inadequate treatment), the possibility of using surrogate markers of hepatotoxicity – FABP protein and cytochrome P-450 2E1 (CYP2E1) – has been investigated (V.I. Petrenko, M.G. Dolynska, 2019).
The department is developing methods of combined chemotherapy and searching for pathogenetic means of treating this disease.
The scheme and method of prescribing the TRI-VI-PLUS complex have been developed and tested, which was first used in the treatment of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis (R.G. Protsyuk, I.M. Kononenko, 2002).
The feasibility of using information-wave therapy “IHT-Threshold” has been proven and a method of its use in the treatment of patients with pulmonary tuberculosis has been developed (V.I. Petrenko, O.M. Pavlenko, 2002).
The effectiveness of singlet oxygen therapy in the complex treatment of tuberculosis patients, which promotes pronounced detoxification of the body (V.I. Petrenko, O.M. Tonkovid, I.L. Ruban, 2006), the drug Dufalak for correction of the amino acid composition of the blood (V.I. Petrenko, I.O. Galan, 2008, 2018, 2019) and Kagocel for correction of immune system indicators in patients with newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis (V.I. Petrenko, Yu.A. Varchenko, 2010, 2015) was studied.
A method of therapy for patients with newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis with additional administration of the hepatoprotector glutargin (V.I. Petrenko, O.M. Pavlenko, 2004), ademetionine (V.I. Petrenko, G.F. Marchenko, 2019) was developed.
Nutritional correction of protein metabolism in patients with newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis has been developed (Galan I.O., 2021)
The role of environmental factors in the occurrence of BLS is the second current problem that the department deals with.
A special place in the occurrence of BLS is given to cigarette smoking (both passive and active) (V.I. Petrenko, O.B. Pikas, 2005, 2018, 2019) and the consequences of ionizing radiation exposure (V.I. Petrenko, O.B. Pikas, 2005, 2013, 2019).
The results of the research were presented at scientific and practical conferences dedicated to environmental issues (Kyiv, 2004, 2016, 2017; Ternopil, 2015, 2016; Odesa 2016, 2018; Lviv, Odesa, 2018; Minsk, Belarus, 2018).
The use of the latest technologies in the diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis is a new direction of scientific research of the department, which is the basis of the candidate dissertations of assistants Bondarenko Ya.V. and Stopolyansky O.V. Research in this direction is conducted jointly with leading scientists from the USA: Brown University Medical School (Providence, Rhode Island) and Boston Medical School (Boston, Massachusetts).
