EURIZON Project: New Opportunities for Ukrainian Science

From January 18 to 25, 2025, the Head of the Department of Pharmacology at Bogomolets National Medical University, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Ganna Volodymyrivna Zaychenko, and the Head of the Department of Modern Medical Diagnostic and Treatment Technologies at Bogomolets National Medical University, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Larysa Valentynivna Natrus, participated in a research internship in Germany as part of the EURIZON grant project (ID# 268). The visit included trips to Berlin University and Ruhr University in Bochum, providing an opportunity to expand scientific collaboration and exchange experience with leading European specialists.

Since 2024, Bogomolets National Medical University has been implementing a research project under the prestigious EU Horizon 2020 Research grant – EURIZON. The project focuses on deciphering the molecular mechanisms of metformin’s effects on the medial preoptic area of the brain and correcting reproductive disorders in type 2 diabetes. The visit of Professors Zaychenko G.V.  and Natrus  L.V. took place within the framework of the “Staff exchange programme for selected EURIZON Fellowship teams,” supported by the European Union and aimed at integrating Ukrainian researchers into the international research community.

Internship at Charité University Hospital

On January 20-21, 2025, Professors Zaychenko G.V.  and Natrus  L.V. underwent training at one of Europe’s most renowned medical centers – the Berlin-Brandenburg Center for Regenerative Therapy at Charité University Hospital. This medical institution is one of the world’s leading research complexes, conducting over 1,000 research projects in collaboration with universities from various countries.

During the internship, special attention was paid to regenerative therapy methods and innovative pharmacological developments for treating neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, and endocrine diseases. Professors Zaychenko G.V.  and Natrus  L.V. explored the potential of flow cytometry – a technique that opens new prospects in assessing the viability of cell-based therapeutic products. The application of these technologies is particularly important for treating severe injuries in both military personnel and civilians.

As part of the internship, a joint seminar with German colleagues was held, where the results of experimental research were discussed, future collaboration directions were identified, and a plan was developed for publishing findings in a scientific journal indexed in Scopus.

Student Conference with International Participation “Annual Young Medical Scientific Conference 2024”

The “Annual Young Medical Scientific Conference 2024” became a landmark event for young scientists eager to engage in solving contemporary issues in medicine and pharmacy. This year, the conference took place on November 21-22 and brought together participants from different regions of Ukraine and around the world.

At the Department of Pharmacology, the “Pharmacy and Pharmacology” section featured substantial scientific research covering modern aspects of drug circulation regulation and pharmaceutical product development. The head of the jury for this section was the head of the Department of Pharmacology, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Ganna Volodymyrivna Zaychenko. The jury also included experienced specialists: the head of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Pharmacological Toxicology, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Iryna Volodymyrivna Nizhenkovska, the head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Economics and Organization, Doctor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Kostiantyn Leonidovych Kosiatchenko, the head of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Mykola Valentynovych Khaitovych, Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacy, Candidate of Medical Sciences Iryna Viktorivna Andrushchenko, Assistant Professor of the Department of Pharmacology, Candidate of Medical Sciences Andriy Oleksandrovych Riznychenko, and Assistant Professor of Pharmacology, Candidate of Pharmaceutical Sciences Oksana Anatoliivna Simanova. The moderator of the section was Illya Meletych, a second-year student of the Pharmaceutical Faculty.

This year’s “Pharmacy and Pharmacology” section stood out for the relevance of its topics and the variety of research presented, which facilitated discussions on key issues, ranging from medical cannabis regulation to the development of innovative cosmetic products. Participants had a unique opportunity to present their scientific achievements, discuss ideas with leading experts, and gain valuable experience that will contribute to their professional growth.

Winners of the Section:

  • First place was awarded to Illya Meletych for his research titled “Study of the Awareness of Higher Medical and Pharmaceutical Education Seekers Regarding the Regulation of Medical Cannabis Circulation in Ukraine.” The presenter demonstrated a thorough understanding of the material and answered questions quickly and accurately, with the presentation meeting all conference requirements. In his work, the student emphasized the importance of introducing educational programs aimed at informing future doctors and pharmacists about the legal aspects of using medical cannabis. This research is particularly relevant in light of global trends towards cannabis legalization for medical purposes.
  • Second place was shared by two works:
    • Oksana Butsan presented research on “Normative and Legal Regulation of Extemporaneous Manufacturing of Medications Based on Medical Cannabis,” analyzing existing legislation and emphasizing the need for improvement in the regulatory framework to expand the use of cannabis in pharmaceutical practice.
    • Kateryna Mikhaylova presented a study titled “Promising Development of Moisturizing Cream for Dry Skin Care,” highlighting the prospects of creating a cosmetic product for dry skin care. The study received high praise from the jury for its practical focus and innovative approach to ingredient selection.

Additionally, within the framework of the conference, the Department of Pharmacology hosted a workshop titled “Pharmacological Lifehacks.” Assistant Professor Oksana Anatoliivna Simanova delivered a report on “Lifehacks for Preventing Iron-Deficiency Anemia,” where she explained how students could detect latent iron deficiency and how to prevent and treat it. An express test for ferritin was offered to all interested students. Senior Lecturer Anna Ihorivna Doroshenko spoke about emergency postcoital contraception and showed educational videos on the release mechanisms and effects of contraceptive drugs. A demonstration was also made of the difference in the dissolution speed between orally disintegrating and regular tablet forms.

The “Annual Young Medical Scientific Conference 2024” once again confirmed its role as an important platform for exchanging experiences between young scientists and experts in the fields of medicine and pharmacy. The presented works not only showcase the high level of student preparation but also highlight their readiness to engage in addressing contemporary health care challenges.

 

Opening of the Cutting-Edge “Cardiopharmacology” Lecture Hall at NMU

On September 19, 2024, the Department of Pharmacology at the Bogomolets National Medical University hosted the grand opening of the new “Cardiopharmacology” lecture hall, created in collaboration with the pharmaceutical company “Darnitsya.” This unique educational environment, unparalleled in Ukraine, is equipped with the latest technologies that aid students in learning cardiopharmacology.

The lecture hall is outfitted with interactive stands, a holographic 3D projector, and a SMART panel, enabling students to study the treatment of cardiovascular diseases—one of the leading causes of death worldwide—in an engaging and dynamic manner. These technologies support better comprehension of complex material through visualization and interactive learning methods.

The opening ceremony was attended by NMU Rector Yuriy Leonidovych Kuchin, university leadership, representatives from “Darnitsya,” as well as faculty members and students. Rector Yuriy Kuchin expressed gratitude to “Darnitsya” for their collaboration, noting that the new educational space opens up new horizons for the professional development of faculty, future doctors, and pharmacists.

Andriy Obryzan, General Director of “Darnitsya,” emphasized the importance of investment in modern medical and pharmaceutical education, pointing out that the quality of education for current students will directly influence the health of future generations.

The uniqueness of the lecture hall lies in the integration of each element into the learning process. Interactive stands showcase various stages of pharmacological intervention for cardiovascular diseases, while the holographic projector visualizes the effects of medications on the heart in real time, helping students understand the mechanism of drug action on the heart, blood vessels, and more.

According to the Head of the Department of Pharmacology, Professor Ganna Volodymyrivna Zaychenko, the creation of this lecture hall was made possible through the synergy of university experts and “Darnitsya,” and the cutting-edge technologies will help students gain deeper knowledge of pharmacology.

This educational space will become a key element in preparing students from the medical, dental, and pharmaceutical faculties, significantly raising the level of knowledge in cardiopharmacology.

 

Training of Pharmacology Department Staff at NMU in Using SMART Interactive Equipment and SMART Learning Suite Software

In September 2024, the staff of the Department of Pharmacology at the Bogomolets National Medical University successfully completed a course on mastering the use of SMART interactive equipment and the SMART Learning Suite software. This training became an important step in the continuous professional development (CPD) of lecturers and the modernization of the educational process.

The main goal of the training was to enhance the skills of working with modern educational technologies, particularly SMART Board interactive panels. With the help of SMART Learning Suite, lecturers will be able to create interactive presentations and conduct assessments that increase student engagement and make the learning process more effective.

Participants gained practical knowledge on using interactive tools for lectures and practical sessions, including in asynchronous learning formats. The ability to use SMART Learning Suite features to create interactive tasks, quizzes, and collaborate with students in real time will help organize a high-quality educational process.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy at NMU to digitalize education, aligning with current demands in medical education.

 

Head of the Department of Pharmacology at the Bogomolets National Medical University, Professor Ganna Volodymyrivna Zaychenko, participated in the ESC 2024 International Cardiological Congress.

From August 30 to September 2, 2024, London hosted one of the most important events in the field of cardiology — the ESC 2024 International Cardiological Congress. Professor Zaychenko, head of the Department of Pharmacology at the Pharmaceutical Faculty of the Bogomolets National Medical University, took part in this event.

This year’s Congress brought together more than 31,800 delegates from around the world, including 5,400 lecturers and speakers. The central theme of the Congress was “Personalization of Cardiovascular Care,” aimed at improving treatment outcomes for patients with cardiovascular diseases.

Important scientific projects were presented at the Congress, including the “Cardiovascular Disease Burden” initiative by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and Oxford University. This project assesses the economic impact of cardiovascular diseases in ESC member countries, helping to better understand the costs of treatment and prevention of these diseases.

Particularly important were the new ESC 2024 clinical guidelines, including: • Guidelines for the treatment of peripheral arteries and the aorta; • Updated guidelines for the treatment of arterial hypertension; • Guidelines for the treatment of atrial fibrillation; • Guidelines for patients with chronic coronary syndromes.

Participation in the Congress was a significant step toward enhancing knowledge of the latest approaches to treating cardiovascular diseases, as well as updating the Department of Pharmacology’s educational programs. This will contribute to the integration of Ukrainian doctors and pharmacists into the European scientific community and improve the quality of the educational process for university students. The materials gained at the Congress will be used to update lecture content and hold thematic sessions for the student scientific club.
