History of department

On September 25, 1944, the Department of Faculty – Propaedeutic Pediatrics was established at the Kyiv Medical Institute, headed by Associate Professor V.G. Balaban (Order No. 226 of September 27, 1944). This date is considered to be the date of foundation of the Department of Faculty of Pediatrics (now Pediatrics Postgraduate Education) of the Kyiv Medical Institute. Professor Vira Balaban became the founder of the department.

 

During all the years of its work the department changed its name – Department of Faculty of Pediatrics, Department of Pediatric Diseases № 1, Department of Pediatrics № 3, Department of Pediatrics Postgraduate Education.

From 1963 to 1965 – Professor Ivan Mikhailovych Rudnev.

From 1965 to 1982 – Professor Prokopiy GUDZENKO.

From 1983 to 1996 and from 2001 2003 – Professor Petro MOSCHICH.

From 1996 to 2001 Doctor of Medical Sciences Viktor Dmytrovych LUKASHUK.

From 2003 to the present – Professor Marushko Yu. V.

 

Professor V.G. Balaban read classic clinical lectures and was a brilliant clinician. The department taught pediatrics and faculty pediatrics during 1944 – 1946. On January 15, 1946, the course of propaedeutic pediatrics became an independent department and the department of faculty pediatrics became separate. In the 1948-1949 academic year the departments of departmental and hospital pediatrics were united under the direction of Professor V.G. Balaban on the basis of the hospital. M.I.Kalinin (order № 504 of September 1, 1948).

 

The name of the department of faculty pediatrics was changed several times. Since 1984 it has been called the Department of Pediatric Diseases № 1 of KMI, since 1990 – the Department of Pediatric Diseases KMI, since 1994 – the Department of Pediatric Diseases № 3 of Ukrainian State Medical University, since 1995 it has been named – Department of Pediatrics № 3 of  Bogomolets National Medical University. In 2003, the Department was reorganized (Order No. 181-l dated February 19, 2003) and divided into the Department of Pediatrics №3 and the Department of Pediatrics № 5. Since the foundation of the Institute of Postgraduate Education in 2015, the department has the current name of the Department of Pediatrics of Postgraduate Education.

 

At the end of 40 years of the last century, the assistant professor P.S. Bunchik, assistants D.K.Itskovich, A.M.Myasnikova, S.A. Mintz, A.R. Weissfeld, in the years 1948-1949 Associate Professor L.E. Zeldich and Assistant Professor A.G. Slonimskaya, Associate Professor Bunich, which for several generations of young people in Kyiv has become a real family doctor.

 

The main focus of research in the 50-60 years of the last century was the study of etiology, pathogenesis, clinics, diagnosis and treatment of acute gastrointestinal diseases and rheumatism in children. Since 1960, under the guidance of prof. V.G. Balaban, the Department started work on the study of staphylococcal infection in children, which became the main scientific topic of the department for many years. In 50 years the staff of the department was supplemented by the assistants of O.I. Lushina and L.G. Kompaniets, during the year, fulfilled the duties of Professor E.G. Gorodetsk (1953-1954). And since the mid-50’s they have become assistants, and in the subsequent associate professors, graduate students O.L.Zykovа, P.S.Moschich, A.A.Eremenko, V.M. Sidelnikov.

In 1963 the department was headed by Professor I.M. Rudnev. Professor Ivan Rudnev was a sophisticated intelligent man with a wide range of scientific interests. Together with Professor I.M. Rudnev worked an experienced scientific and pedagogical team – associate professors P.S. Moshchich, V.M. Sidelnikov, P.S. Bunchik, assistants Zikova О.L., Eremenko A.A., Kompaniets L. G., Shulzhenko T.I., Kuzmenko N.D.

 

In 1965, the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor P.N. Hudzenko,  the 100th anniversary of which the medical community celebrated last year. He has trained 24 candidates and 3 doctors of medical sciences. P.M. Hudzenko was the Dean of the Pediatric Faculty (1976-1978), Chief Pediatrician of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine (1966), Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian Pediatricians Society. Winner of the USSR State Prize (1979). He was awarded the Order of Labor Red Banner and medals. Member of the Great Patriotic War. Under the guidance of Professor P.N. Hudzenko, work on the problems of gastrointestinal diseases in young children, staphylococcal infection and cardiovascular pathology was continued.

 

Professor P.N. Hudzenko established the value of acidophilus-yeast mixtures in the prevention of collienteritis in children, who have been introduced into the practice of milk kitchens. Department of Pediatrics № 1 maintained close relations with all departments of the pediatric profile of medical institutes of Ukraine, resulting in three editions of the textbook “Pediatric Diseases”, edited by Professor P.N. Hudzenko. The editors and authors of the textbook, which became the board book of Ukrainian pediatricians of many issues of medical universities – Professors P.N. Hudzenko, I.M. Rudnev and P.S. Moshchyk were recognized as winners of the USSR State Prize.

 

Professor P.N. Hudzenko

 

In 1983 (after the death of Professor P.N. Hudzenko in 1982), the Department was headed by Professor P.S.Moschich. Doctor of Medical Sciences (1967), Professor (1970), Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Higher School of Ukraine, New York Academy of Sciences (USA). He graduated from the Medical Faculty of Uzhgorod State University in 1952. He is a pupil of Professor V.G. Balaban and Professor I.M. Rudnev. From 1971 to 1983 he headed the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. From 1983 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2003 – Head of the Department of Pediatrics № 3 NMU.

 

The main directions of scientific work: cardiology of childhood, tuberculosis, prevention of diseases in children, acute drip and intestinal infections, hepatitis, neuroinfection, organization of medical care for children. P.S.Moschich for the first time in our country described in children vibrating systolic noise, applied and studied a sample with amilnitrite for differential diagnosis of cardiac noise. Author of more than 670 scientific papers, 47 monographs, manuals (author and co-author), including – 6 books of the book “Childhood Medicine”, 15 inventions (patents), 60 methodical recommendations, 56 fact sheets. Has trained 8 doctors and 26 candidates of medical sciences, among them the doctor of medical sciences L. Trishkova (she was the head of the department of pediatric infectious diseases of KMI), the doctor of medical sciences LI. Chernyshov (Head of the Department of Pediatric Infectious Diseases of CMAP); Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Marushko Yu. V. is now the Head of the Department of Postgraduate Education; Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor  Borysenko M. I. – Professor of the Department of Postgraduate Education at the present time; Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor HyshchakT.V. – now Professor of the Department; Candidates of Medical Sciences O.L. Tarynska, Boyko N.S.,  Shef G. G. – now associate professors of the Department of Pediatrics Postgraduate Education; Chabanovych O.V and Moskovenko O. D.; Associate Professor VL Dembbitsky – worked as the chief doctor of DCL№ 8.

 

For almost 20 years, P.S. Moshchych was the Chief Pediatric Infectious Disease, then the Chief Pediatrician of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.

Winner of the State Prize of Ukraine (1979). Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine (1989). He was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of St. Vladimir, the Order of Yaroslav the Wise, the Order of Merit of the 3rd degree, medals. Member of the Great Patriotic War. Under the guidance of prof. Moschich P.S. the staff of the department continued the study of staphylococcal infections in children, continues the study of rheumatism. Between 1994 and 2001, six volumes of the multi-volume manual, “Childhood Medicine,” edited by Professor P.S. Moshchyk, became popular among pediatricians. Professor P.S.Moschich headed an experienced scientific and pedagogical team consisting of associate professors О.L. Zykova, A.A. Eremenko, and later associate professors V.V. Berezhnyi and L.I. Chernyshova, and assistants L.V. Galitskaya, T.M.Ilyinskaya, M.I.Borysenko, L.V.Kurylo, Marushko Yu. V., T.I.Olefir. They defended their dissertations and became teachers of the department Assistants Boyko N.S., Chabanovych O.V, Tarynska O.L., V.L.Dembitsky, Shef G. G., O.V.Lavrenchuk, HyshchakT.V.

 

In 1996, Doctor of Medical Sciences V.D. Lukashuk was elected Head of the Department of Pediatrics № 3. Doctor of Medical Sciences (1992). He graduated from Lviv Medical Institute, a student of Professor Tebenchuk G.M. (PLShupyk NMAPO).

 

The main directions of scientific work are devoted to the problems of pediatric gastroenterology and cardiology.

 

In 2003 the Department of Pediatrics № 3 was reorganized and headed by Marushko Yu.V., Doctor of Medical Sciences (2000), Professor (2002). He graduated from the Kyiv Medical Institute (1980), a student of Professor Gudenko PM. and Professor PS Moschich P.S.

 

In 2015, the department was reorganized and became a part of IPO NMU. Since that time, the Department of Pediatrics Postgraduate Education has been preparing interns in the specialties “Pediatrics” and “Neonatology”, “General practice of family medicine”, provides students with 2-3 courses of medical faculties, as well as conducts thematic improvement courses for doctors of various specialties.

 

Professor Marushko Yu. V. – Head of the Department from July 2003 to the present. Main directions of scientific activity: differentiated approach to therapy and rehabilitation of children, who are often ill with respiratory infections, treatment and prevention of staphylococcal diseases in children, treatment and prevention of non-rheumatic heart diseases in children, questions of development of healthy child, phytotherapy in pediatrics, actuaries.

 

Marushko Yu. V. is the author of more than 800 scientific works, co-author of 13 monographs, 7 textbooks, 66 manuals, 13 methodological recommendations, 12 sectoral innovations. Priority of the performed researches is confirmed by 51 copyright certificates and patents of Ukraine.

The department has a scientific student club since 1946. More than 1000 students actively participated in the work of the scientific student club for the years 1946-2014. Many of them after graduation received diplomas with honors, recommended for scientific work.

 

At the Department of Pediatrics Postgraduate Education, under the guidance of experienced teachers, all students of the Faculty of Pediatrics were trained, and since 1998 all students of the Faculty of Medicine №4, about 5,000 students. Recently, the department trains all doctors interns in the specialties “pediatrics” and “neonatology”.

 

For practitioners, thematic improvements are made on topical problems of pediatrics, neonatology, and urgent conditions. The department introduced cycles of specialization and internships in pediatrics, pediatric allergy, pediatric gastroenterology.

The graduates of the department successfully work in medical and preventive institutions of Ukraine and abroad. Nowadays, the Department of Pediatrics of the Bogomolets National Medical University continues the glorious traditions founded by prominent employees.

For a significant contribution to the training of medical personnel, most of the department’s teachers are represented by the Bogomolets Scientific Council of NMU before the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the University.

 

To date, the main directions of the scientific and practical work of the department are related to the study of various somatic pathology in children. The main of these areas are: arterial dystonias (hypertension, hypotension) in children, exercise tolerance in children with various somatic pathologies, trace elements, functional and organic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, lactase deficiency.

 

Over the last ten years, the department has published 10 textbooks for students and interns, 5 guidelines, 3 manuals for doctors, one monograph.

 

The most fundamental of these are the educational manuals on cardio-rheumatological diseases in children – “Cardiology of Childhood” (2018) and “Rheumatology of Childhood” (2019), which were attended by leading pediatric cardio-rheumatologists of Ukraine.
