History of the department
The Department of Clinical Immunology and Allergology with the Section of Medical Genetics is the main educational and scientific structural division of the National Medical University named after O.O. Bogomolets, which carries out educational and methodological activities in three related disciplines (clinical immunology, allergology and medical genetics), as well as educational, research and medical and advisory work.
In accordance with the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 288 of 04/21/1993 “On the approval of the National Program of Immunoprophylaxis of the Population for 1993-2000” and based on the decision of the Academic Council of the Ukrainian State Medical University, the corresponding order No. 149 of 03/21/94 was issued. “About the organization of the department of clinical immunology and allergology with a course of children’s clinical immunology”. According to this Order, the newly created Department of Clinical Immunology and Allergology began operating in October 1994, which became the first specialized department in all Higher Medical Institutions of Ukraine.
From 1994 to 2011, the department was headed by Doctor of Medicine, Professor Drannik Georgy Mykolayovych, who at that time worked as the head of the immunology laboratory of the Institute of Urology and Nephrology of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and was the Chief freelance specialist of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on laboratory and clinical immunology. In a short period of time, the employees of the newly created department developed a Model Program for the discipline “Clinical Immunology and Allergology” and working curricula for medical faculties.
In September 1995, the department accepted the first students.
Since 1997, the department has been approved as a reference center for the discipline “Clinical immunology and allergology”. Annually, appropriate methodical meetings are held on its basis with the participation of heads of specialized departments and courses of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.
In 1999, Professor H.M. Drannik the first textbook in Ukraine “Clinical immunology and allergology” was published, which later became a national textbook on the discipline. Employees of the department developed and published methodical works on 15 topics for classroom and extracurricular work.
In 2010, the medical genetics section was added to the department of clinical immunology and allergology.
Since 2011, the department has been headed by a student of Professor Drannik Georgy Mykolayovych, Doctor of Medicine, Professor Andrii Igorovych Kurchenko.
The department trains students of all faculties, doctors of philosophy, masters and doctoral students in disciplines and specialties “Clinical immunology”, “Clinical allergology”, “Immunology and allergology”, “Medical genetics”.
Since 2019, the department has been conducting thematic improvement cycles for doctors, since 2020 – specialization in the specialty “Allergology”, since 2023 – in the specialty “Clinical Immunology”.
During the department’s existence, 2 graduate students and 1 master’s degree were trained, 9 candidate theses and 3 dissertations for the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences were successfully defended. The teaching staff of the department includes: 4 professors, 4 associate professors, 5 assistants, including 3 doctors and 9 candidates of medical sciences. V. O. Galagan, professor of the department, has the honorary title “Honored Doctor of Ukraine”.
Since 1996, the department’s clinical bases have been recognized as bases of the Pharmacological Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine for conducting clinical trials of new immunotropic drugs. Employees of the department have relevant certificates of the State Expert Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. The second phase of clinical trials of 7 new domestic medicines was carried out at the department.
Over the years of its existence, the department has developed 16 research topics and obtained declaratory patents of Ukraine and author’s certificates (diploma at the Exhibition – “Ukrtechnologiya 2004”).
Over the past 5 years, employees have published about 20 scientific works, including 5 in a foreign language, 15 reports have been made at various scientific and scientific-practical forums in Ukraine and abroad.
With the support of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and NMU from 1995 to 2019, with the participation of the department’s employees and its leaders, the first head of the department, Professor H.M. Drannik. and today’s head of the department Professor A.I. Kurchenko, 31 scientific and practical forums were prepared and held, three of which had the status of National Congresses (Alushta, 1998, Myrhorod, 2007, Dnipro, 2019), 2 international symposia (Kyiv, 2005), the 1st International School of Immunology (Kyiv, 2011) and 26 All-Ukrainian conferences on topical issues of clinical immunology and allergology.
In May 1998, the First National Congress on Clinical Immunology and Allergology (Alushta) was held with the active participation of the department’s employees. The Ukrainian Society of Specialists in Immunology, Allergology and Immunorehabilitation was created, which was headed by the head of the department, Professor G.M. Drannik. and participation in which all employees of the department take part.
In September 2001, with the participation of the department’s staff, under the auspices of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology, the 1st International School of Young Scientists of Immunologists-Allergists was held, in which young people from European and American countries studied; 32 foreign specialists took part in the lectures.
On October 5, 2005, the international symposium “Early detection of atopy” for allergists-immunologists, pediatricians and family doctors was held in Kyiv with the participation of department employees. Speakers were experts from Great Britain, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria. The event was held under the auspices of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) and the Global European Network for Allergology and Asthma.
Employees of the department are members of the American and European Academies of Allergology and Clinical Immunology and the American College of Allergology, Asthma and Immunology. Since 1998, the Department of Clinical Immunology and Allergology has been closely cooperating with the New England Institute of Immunology (USA). The head of the institute, a well-known scientist and teacher in the field of clinical immunology and allergology, emeritus professor of NMU Laurens DuBasque periodically gives open lectures for students and teachers of medical universities of Ukraine.
The department has student research groups in the disciplines “Clinical Immunology and Allergology” and “Medical Genetics”, whose members have repeatedly taken first place at the All-Ukrainian Student Olympiads and won prizes at both domestic and foreign professional conferences.
DRANNIK GEORGIY MYKOLAYOVYCH
Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor, first head of the Department of Clinical Immunology and Allergology from 1994 to 2011.
In 1965, he graduated with honors from the medical faculty of the Kharkiv Medical Institute, postgraduate student (1968), candidate of medical sciences (1972), doctor of medical sciences (1980), professor (1986), head of the laboratory of immunology of the Institute of Urology of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences (1980), head of the department of clinical of immunology and allergology with a course in pediatric clinical immunology (1994-2011), which since 1997 has been a mainstay among departments of the same name in Ukraine.
Chief specialist of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on clinical and laboratory immunology (1992-2004), took a direct part in the creation of a practical service of clinical immunology in Ukraine.
Head of the Problem Commission of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the AMS of Ukraine “Clinical Immunology and Allergology” (from 1998 to 2011), member of the Presidium of the Scientific Medical Council of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, member of the Pharmacological Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
Since 1998, the specialized magazine “Immunology and Allergology”, now “Immunology and Allergology: Science and Practice”, which is included in the List of publications approved by the Supreme Administrative Court of Ukraine, has been published; the chief editor of the magazine is the first head of the department, professor H.M. Drannik
Since 2000, the First President of the Ukrainian Society of Specialists in Immunology, Allergology and Immunorehabilitation. To date, he is the Honorary President of the Ukrainian Society of Specialists in Immunology, Allergology and Immunorehabilitation.
Since 1999, a member of the European Academy of Allergology and Clinical Immunology; member of the American College of Allergology, Asthma and Immunology. Founder and editor-in-chief of the journal “Immunology and Allergology”.
Author of more than 450 scientific works, 6 monographs, 1 textbook, 8 patents for inventions, 10 author’s certificates; trained 7 doctors and 25 candidates of medical sciences.
Andriy Ihorovych Kurchenko, doctor of medical sciences, professor.
The Head of the Department of the Clinical and Laboratory Immunology, Allergology and Medical Genetics of the O. O. Bogomolets National Medical University. He is an expert of the Scientific Expert Council of the State Expert Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. Hen is an active member of the European and American Academies of Allergology and Clinical Immunology, vice President of the Ukrainian Society of Specialists in Immunology, Allergology and Immunorehabilitation (UTIAI). He is an expert of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in the direction of “Allergological assistance and immunology” (2023,) Deputy editor of the journal “Immunology and Allergology. Science and practice”, co-author of the national textbooks “Clinical and Laboratory Immunology” (2012) and “Immunology” (2013).
In 1982, he was graduated with honors from the Chernivtsi Medical Institute, majoring in “Medical business”] .
In 1993 Andrii Igorovich Kurchenko defended his candidate’s thesis “The role of cell-mediated immunity in the pathogenesis of eczema and the method of immunocorrective therapy of patients.”.
In 1996, he completed an internship in Great Britain.
Since 1997, an assistant, and since 2005, an associate professor of the department of clinical immunology and allergology with the section of medical genetics of the O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University.
In 2008, he defended his doctoral thesis “Atopic dermatitis: characteristics of changes in systemic and local immunity” (scientific consultant Professor Drannik Georgy Mykolayovych).
In 2012, he was elected to the position of the head of the Department of Clinical Immunology and Allergology with the Medical Genetics Section of O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University.
In 2014, A. I. Kurchenko was awarded the academic title of professor.
The subject of Professor Kurchenko’s scientific research includes: immunology of mucous membranes and skin, immunodermatology, allergology, molecular genetics [3] .
From 2018 to 2023, head of the National Research Institute “Improving the diagnosis and treatment of allergic and immune-dependent diseases based on the study of immunological and genetic features of associate lymphoid tissue.”
Deputy editor-in-chief of the specialized journal “Immunology and Allergology: Science and Practice”, member of the editorial board of the journal “Asthma and Allergy”.
Co-author of 2 textbooks, 3 training manuals, 5 educational programs, more than 200 scientific works, 7 patents for inventions.
In his scientific and research work cooperats with Harvard University professor, head of the Institute for Immunological Research of New England (IRINE) Laurence Du Basque began, which was the beginning of scientific cooperation between the O. O. Bogomolets National Medical University and the Institute for Immunological Research of New England (IRINE) in Gardner ( USA).
In 2019, within the framework of the intergovernmental agreement between Ukraine and the People’s Republic of China, at the personal invitation of the BoZhun medical company, Professor Kurchenko was on a working visit to the People’s Republic of China. A. I. Kurchenko gave a series of lectures on the issues of genetic foundations and modern methods of diagnosis and treatment of immune-dependent skin diseases, a large number of consultations, consultations, and discussions of treatment results were held. An agreement on scientific and advisory cooperation with the Research Institute of Prevention and Therapy (Guangzhou, Guangdong province) was also signed, and negotiations were held on the involvement of Ukrainian specialists from academic centers and universities in joint scientific projects.
