Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Toxicology
The Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Toxicology is a graduating Department of the Pharmaceutical Faculty, which provides training for students in the specialty I8 “Pharmacy”, G21 “Biotechnology and Bioengineering” and І5 “Nursing”. In 2014, the Department of Pharmaceutical, Biological and Toxicological Chemistry separated as a graduating Department of the Pharmaceutical Faculty and since 2021 has been called “Medicinal Chemistry and Toxicology”.
The main task of the Department is to significantly improve the quality of teaching through the use of innovative methods and technologies for the implementation of scientific research in the fields of medicines analysis, biochemical research methods, toxicological chemistry and pedagogical research and the formation of an effective system of control and evaluation of students’ knowledge.
The Department provides teaching students of 1-5 courses of full-time, evening and part-time forms of education 13 mandatory disciplines, such as “Cell Biology“, “Organic Chemistry”, “Pharmaceutical aspects of psychoactive substance use disorders”, “Biological Chemistry”, “Pharmaceutical Chemistry”, “Cellular and Molecular Biochemistry“, “Toxicological and Forensic Chemistry”, “Medicinal Toxicology”, “Basics of pharmacokinetic modelling in silico“, “Standardization of Medicines”, “Modern methods of researching biological objects“, “Standardization and certification of biotechnology products”, “Manufacturing practice in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and standardization of medicines”, as well as 7 elective disciplines, including “Theoretical foundations of synthesis and the relationship between the structure and action of medicines”, “Cultivation of biological organisms”, “Methods for purifying proteins and peptides”, “Verification of quality control methods for biotechnologically produced medicines”, “Validation in the quality system for biotechnological products”, “In silico modeling of the pharmacokinetics of biotechnological drugs” and “Drug quality control practical training”
Among the scientific and pedagogical staff of the Department there are highly qualified teachers, including 2 Doctors and 15 Candidates of Sciences, who have significant experience both in teaching and in research activities.
Scientific interests of the Department include synthesis and pharmacological assessment of biological activity of new compounds in silico and in vivo; development and improvement of methods of laboratory analysis of medicines and dietary supplements; research into the molecular mechanisms of cell damage and the therapeutic and prophylactic use of compounds with metabolic action; educational and methodological support, reform of higher pharmaceutical education, introduction of modern educational technologies taking into account the specifics of teaching Organic, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Toxicological Chemistry for students of the Pharmaceutical Faculty.
The Department actively cooperates with leading scientific institutions and pharmaceutical enterprises such as: The State Expert Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, The State Service of Medicines and Drug Control of Ukraine, Central Laboratory for Quality Control of Medicines and Medical Products (Kyiv), Palladin Institute of Biochemistry of NAS of Ukraine, State Institution “Marzieiev Institute of Public Health of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine”, V.P. Kukhar Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry and Petrochemistry (IBOPC) of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, “Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine”, which contributes to the quality training of future specialists in the pharmaceutical industry.

- Modern instrumental methods of pharmaceutical analysis of medicinal substances and their combinations.
- Computer-based prediction of physical and chemical parameters and pharmacological activity of biologically active substances (including medicines).
- Computer-based prediction of toxicity profiles of biologically active substances (including medicines).
- Chemical and toxicological analysis of xenobiotic content in plant-derived materials.
- Development of specifications and quality control methods for dietary supplements using modern physical and chemical analytical methods.
- Development of specifications and quality control methods for therapeutic cosmetics using modern physical and chemical analytical methods.
- Development and validation of analytical methods for determining active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) by HPLC.
- In silico studies of the pharmacokinetic parameters of chemical compounds and medicines.
- Biochemistry and pathobiochemistry of the molecular mechanisms of biomembrane damage and the therapeutic and prophylactic use of bioantioxidants.
- Synthesis and screening of the pharmacological activity of new compounds.
