News of department

On December 20, 2023 as part of the Scientific and Practical Conference with International Participation “Pharmaceutical education, science and practice: state, problems, prospects of development”, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Pharmaceutical Faculty of the Bogomolets National Medical University, the meeting of the section “Modern approaches to standardization and methods of quality control of medicines, dietary supplements and medical cosmetics” was held.

The moderators of the work of this section were the head of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Toxicology, Professor I.V. Nizhenkovska and the head of the Department of Analytical, Physical and Colloidal Chemistry, Associate Professor G.M. Zaitseva. Scientists and stakeholders from Ukraine, Poland, India and Macedonia took part in the work of the section. Our country was represented by employees of the Department of Analytical Chemistry of the Faculty of Chemistry of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and the Department of Pharmacognosy with Medical Botany of I. Horbachevsky Ternopil National Medical University. Among the foreign participants were scientists from the Department of Drug Chemistry, Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis of Medical University of Warsaw and the Department of Life Sciences of Rani Durgavati University (Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India). Among the participants were employees of the Pharmaceutical Analysis Laboratory of the State Expert Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Central Laboratory for Quality Control of Medicines and Medical Products, the International joint laboratory group PHARM and the State Institution “O.M. Students of the Pharmaceutical Faculty carry out final qualification works at the base of the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.

The main direction of work of the “Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine” is fundamental research aimed at studying the mechanisms of the formation of pathological conditions, general and specific features of the action of physiologically active substances at various levels of the organization of living matter, as well as in organs and the organism in general. Other areas of the Institute’s work are participation in the development and examination of state scientific and technical programs for the creation of medicines, regulatory documents and legislative acts related to the development and production of drugs. The Institute has created a normative base for the regulation of the procedure of preclinical study, examination and registration of medicines in Ukraine, developed methodical documents on preclinical study of medicines.

The Institute has several powerful Departments, including the Laboratory for Pharmacology of Antimicrobials. For several years in a row, Master’s students of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Toxicology (head of the Department – MD, Professor I.V. Nizhenkovska) have been performing final qualification works under the supervision of the head of the Laboratory, Professor, MD Nina O. Vrynchanu. The Laboratory conducts research in various directions, including: screening of synthesized compounds for the presence of antibacterial and antifungal activity, antimicrobial activity of medicines of various pharmacological groups, preclinical research and development of new antimicrobial drugs, study of their mechanisms of action.

Within the framework of the cooperation agreement between the Bogomolets National Medical University and the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 5th-year students Chumak Yehor and Ivzhenko Olha investigate the effect of compounds on the biofilms of bacteria and fungi, determine the anti-biofilm activity of macrolides, the sensitivity of microorganisms to antimicrobial medicines using the disco-diffusion method. This direction of research is actual, because most infectious diseases occur with the formation of bacterial biofilms. Such biofilms can infect not only the organism of the carrier of infection, but also settle on the surface of medical equipment, so this problem is especially acute in wartime and requires an effective solution.

The Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Toxicology expresses its gratitude to the Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine for fruitful collaboration and hopes for productive cooperation in the future!

On January 24 May 16, 2023 Professor I.V. After the detonation of the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station by the russian army on June 6, 2023 active gatherings of humanitarian aid for residents of the flooded areas of the Kherson region began throughout Ukraine. One of the first and largest such actions was organized in Zhytomyr by a 4th year student of the Pharmaceutical Faculty of Bogomolets National Medical University Mariia Yanushevych.

Therefore, already on June 7 in Zhytomyr residents of the city brought humanitarian aid to Peremogy Square: blankets, clothes, long-term storage products, water, animal feed and other things needed by flood victims. The meeting was organized by a 21-year-old student of Bogomolets National Medical University Mariia Yanushevych with her brother. On their own initiative, they appealed to their compatriots on social networks to help. The collected aid was sent to Kherson and the Kherson region, and part of it was given to the people of Kherson who were evacuated to different regions of Ukraine. Employees of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Toxicology joined the humanitarian gathering.

Assistant Veronika Provorova took part in the Academic exchange program for young scientists ERASMUS+ within the framework of cooperation between the Warsaw Medical University (Poland) and the Bogomolets National Medical University.

The internship lasted 3.5 months, during which the assistant was involved in scientific projects of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry and the Department of Organic and Physical Chemistry under the leadership of the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, dr hab. n. farm. Piotr Luliński and dr hab. n. farm. Joanna Giebułtowicz. During the internship, she got acquainted with educational and methodological support, scientific and pedagogical activities of the Departments, had the opportunity to get the experience from Polish colleagues of conducting practical classes. Together with other participants of the exchange, she joined the 18th Warsaw International Medical Congress for students and young scientists, dedicated to topical issues of medicine and pharmacy.
