History of department

Initial name – department of therapy in sanitary hygienic faculty at Bogomolets Kyiv medical institute (KMI) – founded in 1932 on the base of therapeutic division in railway hospital in Kyiv city in M. Kotsiubynskogo str., 8, for 60 beds. The head at department was the pupil of founder for Kyiv therapeutic school of V.P. Obraztsov professor Fedir Arystarkhovych Udintsev.

Due to transfer of V.A. Udintsev to department of hospital therapy, professor Oleksander Semenovych Berliand was  the head of department since 1938 until 1939 on part-time basis. At the same time he was the head of department of propedeutic and hospital therapy

In 1939 the head of department was professor Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Elberg, pupil of academician M.D. Strazhesko. He occupied that post until 1941.
At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War the department together with the institute was evacuated to Cheliabinsk city, where it was managed on part time basis by head of department of hospital therapy professor F.A. Udintsev (1941-1944).

After return to Kyiv the department was headed by professor Vadym Mykolayovych Ivanov in 1944.
He is the pupil of academician T.G. Yanovskyy. The clinical base of department was Kyiv hospital for service of water transport workers – well equipped medical establishment at that time with high level in organization of diagnostic and medical work (Novopavlivska str., 9).

In 1951 the head of department was again professor V.O. Elberg (after transfer of V.M. Ivanov to department of hospital therapy). The clinical base of department is Kyiv city hospital No 14 (block 6 in Shovkovychna str., 39/1) and since 1955 – Kyiv railway hospital No 1 (M. Kotsuybynskogo str., 8). At that time the number of beds in clinical base reached 190.

After retirement of professor V.O. Elberg in 1959 the department was managed by assistant professor Ye.I. Lichtenstein, who in 1960 was appointed to the post of head in course of occupational pathology.

In 1960 the head of department on competitive basis became professor V.S. Nesterov, who worked in Voronezh until that time.

After his death (1973) and until 1988 the department was managed by pupil of academician V.M. Ivanov professor Yevgen Lvovych Revutskyy.
In 1986 the department received the new clinical base – newly built five storey therapeutic block No 2 in clinical hospital No 3 in Dniprovskyy district in c. Kyiv (P. Zaporozhtsa str., 26) for 240 beds of therapeutic profile.

In 1988 due to transfer of professor Ye.L. Revutskyy to the post of professor, the head of department on competitive basis became professor T.D. Nykula, pupil of professor A.P. Peleshchuk.

In 1990 the clinical base of department was enlarged up to 260 beds after organization of division on chronic hemodialysis.
Since 1, September, 1990 due to change in the name of faculty and specialty, the department was renamed into department of therapy in medical preventive faculty at KMI, which since 1, September, 1992 received the name of Bogomolets Ukrainian State Medical University (USMU).

Reforming higher school in Ukraine resulted in gradual reduction in the number of students of medical preventive profile that studied at department of therapy (1993-1997). But since 1993 the department started teaching propedeutics of internal diseases to students from half of medical faculties in the university. Since 1, September, 1994 the department of therapy in medical preventive faculty was reorganized into department of propedeutics of internal diseases No 2 in USMU, and the latter one in 1995 received the status of Bogomolets National Medical University.
In 2000 two divisions of clinical base of the department (nephrology unit and chronic hemodialysis) were officially reorganized into city nephrology center that also included into nephrology consulting office.
