DEPARTMENT OF FAMILY MEDICINE (GENERAL PRACTICE)
About the deparment
The department was founded in 1997 on the basis of the Department of Hospital Therapy No. 3 with a course of military field therapy on the initiative of Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Valery Vasilyevich Zboromirsky. For a long time, he held the position of chief therapist of the Main Department of Health and Medical Support of Kyiv and understood the deep aspects of work in this specialty. It was Valery Vasilyevich who wrote the thesis about the transfer of the main load in the medical process at the outpatient stage and the need to change the functions of the primary care physician. Professor Zboromirsky was the head of the department from 1997 to 2003. In 2003 , Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Olga Girina was elected to the position of the head of the department, who headed the department until 2014. Under the leadership of O.M. Girina, more than 200 scientific papers were published at the department, including 8 textbooks and 14 patents. In 2005, by the order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine dated December 12, 2005 No. 762, the department was recognized as a reference among similar departments of higher medical educational institutions of Ukraine of III-IV levels of accreditation. Together with the departments of other universities, a program has been developed undergraduate studies for 5th and 6th year students, as well as an elective course in family medicine. Since December 2014, the department has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Olga Barna, the author of more than 300 publications, including 1 patent of Ukraine, a collection of lectures on cardiology, a textbook on self-control of diabetes mellitus. The range of scientific interests currently concerns preventive, gender and anti-aging medicine, stratification of risk factors and cardiovascular pathology in diabetes mellitus. 20 dissertations are being carried out at the department, 14 Ph.D. theses have been defended. All employees of the department carry out active research and medical activities at the clinical bases of the department. In 2024, 16 scientific forums were held on the basis of the Department of General Practice (Family Medicine).
Also, on the basis of the department, multicenter clinical studies are carried out in the following areas – rheumatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, therapy.
The Department of General Practice allows interns to acquire not only practical skills, but also the opportunity to develop from a scientific point of view, which contributes to a deeper definition of the health of the whole family, early diagnosis, treatment and prevention of patients at the pre-hospital stage and improving the quality of doctor training for the outpatient health care unit.
