History of Department

Department of Endocrinology – 30 years

The beginning of scientific research on endocrinology at our university began in the second half of the 19th century at the medical faculty of the University of St. Volodymyr by the works of N.A. Khrjonshchevskii (1859), V.A. Betsa (1867), V.V. Pidvysotskyi (1886), and other outstanding scientists. Kyiv surgeon and the first dean of the medical faculty of the University of St. Volodymyr V.A. In 1842, Karavaev successfully performed his first strumectomy.

Academicians made a significant contribution to the study of the physiology and pathology of the adrenal glands. Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR V.P. Komisarenko, who in 1950-1954 headed the Department of Pathological Physiology of KMI. Later, surgical endocrinology developed intensively (O.K. Gorchakov,

I.V. Komisarnko, M.P. Cherenko, M.M. Kovalev, and others). Systematized teaching of endocrinology began in 1973 at the Department of Hospital Therapy No. 2, and in 1978, a course in endocrinology was organized at the medical institute, which was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor P.M. Bodnar.

The origins of endocrinology department at our university were founded by Acad. V.P. Komisarenko, Prof. A.P. Peleshchuk, Acad. A.S. Yefimov, and its organizer and first director was prof. P.M. Bodnar. The Department of Endocrinology, as a separate structural division of the university, was founded in 1992.

Since 2016, the department has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor Yuliia Komisarenko, a graduate of Kyiv Medical Institute named after O.O. Bogomolets (now – NMU). She is the author of more than 250 scientific works, including 3 monographs. With her participation, 25 textbooks and teaching aids were published. Together with the co-authors, in 2007 she was awarded the Prize of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine for the best textbook in the field of “Clinical Medicine”, and the textbook on endocrinology in 2013 received the status of National.

Today, the Department of Endocrinology of NMU named after O.O. Bogomolets is a mainstay among higher medical educational institutions for teaching endocrinology.

Employees of the department participated in the publication of thirteen textbooks on endocrinology for undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Ukrainian and English. They also developed educational programs in the discipline “Endocrinology” with the specialty of medical care, pediatrics, medical and preventive care, and medical psychology and participated in the preparation of the program in the discipline “Internal Medicine” in Ukrainian and English.

They work in the department:

Head, Doctor of Medicine, Professor  Y.I. Komisarenko, associate professors: Doctor of Medicine H.P. Mikhalchyshyn, Doctor of Medicine. N.M. Kobylyak, Ph.D.

М.I. Bobryk, Ph.D. L.V. Shulyarenko, Ph.D. K.O. Kondratyuk, assistants:

Ph.D. V.M. Konakh, L.O. Prystupyuk, V.M. Yerohovych, and 5 part-time teachers, two clinical residents from foreign countries. The staff of the department takes an active part in the work of international and European congresses and international multi-center research of pharmaceutical preparations.

Our teachers improved their professional skills in the USA, the People’s Republic of China, Italy, and the UAE. We have trained more than 30 endocrinologists for China, Russia, Georgia, Turkmenistan, Poland, Greece, Syria, Iran, Peru, Palestine, Jordan and Cyprus, Tunisia, and four of them became candidates in medical sciences, one received a PhD.

Currently, the Department of Endocrinology of O.O. Bogomolets is the top of educational and methodological work on teaching endocrinology in Ukraine. It is a mainstay among higher medical educational institutions of Ukraine, the department’s employees take an active part in the post-graduate education of doctors – the department offers Thematic improvements courses and specializations in endocrinology. An educational and methodological basis for teaching endocrinology has been created: programs on endocrinology for students of the 4th and 6th years of the medical, pediatric, medical and psychological faculties of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and 3 programs on elective disciplines for students of the 4th and 5th years.

Since the establishment of endocrinology as a separate independent discipline of higher medical educational institutions, we have always felt the need to constantly improve educational and methodological work, increase cognitive activity, and ultimately the quality of student education. The staff of the department published 11 textbooks for students in Ukrainian and English.

Employees of the department of endocrinology carry out significant medical, diagnostic, and advisory work at the department’s clinical bases. Over the past 2 years, the department’s employees have consulted more than 3,000 patients. We are especially proud of the monthly scientific and practical conferences of endocrinologists in Kyiv, which we have been holding for over 30 years. Our employees, as well as invited scientists and practitioners, speak at them. The lecturers of the department often act as experts of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in the preparation of documents for the endocrinological service. The Department of Endocrinology has been conducting annual training courses for nurses in endocrinology offices in Kyiv for many years.

Since the creation of the endocrinology course (1978), and soon after, the department has had a student scientific circle. The first members of students’ scientific society today are already scientists and work at the endocrinology department of the university, and research and medical institutions of the city. Among the latter, it is necessary to note

D.V. Kiriyenko, who was a member of the student scientific society, a clinical resident of the department, defended his candidate’s thesis on the use of intravenous laser irradiation of blood in the treatment of disorders of autonomic innervation of the heart in patients with diabetes. For more than 30 years, he has been the head of the general endocrine pathology department of the Kyiv City Clinical Endocrinological Center.

O. Serdyuk acquired scientific work skills in the circle. She was fascinated by the problem of ultrasound diagnostics of endocrine patients, her fascination turned into an in-depth study of the ultrasound semiotics of the state of the liver in diabetes depending on the state of compensation of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. Defended PhD thesis on this topic. Victoria Oleksandrivna headed the diagnostics department of the Kyiv City Clinical Endocrinology Center.

The head of the student scientific society, in the past, Yerokovich Viktoriya Mykolaivna, today works at the department as a teacher and performs scientific work on the problem of diabetic chronic kidney disease and vitamin D. The members of the group were Professor Y.I. Komisarenko and associate professors of the department:

G.P. Mikhalchyshyn, M. I. Bobryk, assistant V. M. Konakh.

12-18 students work permanently in the circle of the department. A section on endocrinology works at annual scientific conferences of the University. The works of the faculty members are presented at Ukrainian and International scientific meetings.
