We presented a poster on the results of a study of the frequency and improvement of the diagnosis of iron deficiency in patients on an agliadin diet.
In this work, the indicators of iron metabolism (the content of hemoglobin, ferritin, iron, transferrin and its iron saturation were investigated) in patients who followed an agliadin diet due to the presence of celiac disease or gluten intolerance without celiac disease.
It turned out that the most noticeable decrease in ferritin content (in 31.6%) and – to a lesser extent – iron content (in 23%) was the most noticeable in such patients. Hemoglobin content was reduced in only 13% of patients, and erythrocyte content was within the normal range in all examined.
At the same time, among persons with reduced ferritin content, the hemoglobin content was reduced in 41.7%, and 58.3% of patients, thus, had hidden iron deficiency. These indicators were, respectively, 13% and 18.5% of all examined persons. Based on these data, we concluded that patients with gluten-sensitive pathology have a high risk of developing iron-deficiency states, and the hemoglobin content indicator in their diagnosis turned out to be insensitive. We recommend that such patients be screened for hidden iron deficiency, and the most sensitive marker of iron deficiency is the level of ferritin in the blood.
Abstracts of the report are published in the conference collection, which is available at the link: gastro-2021-prague-abstract-book.pdf (guarant.eu)
