Department of neurosurgery

History of the department

The development of neurosurgery as a discipline in Ukraine was facilitated by the scientific development of leading scientists of the Kyiv University of St. Vladimir, and later by the Kyiv Medical Institute in the XIX-XX centuries, in particular, Professor V.O. Betz “On the details of the structure of the human cerebral cortex”, “Two centers in the cortical substance of the brain” (1874). Already from the second half of the nineteenth century. talented surgeon Yu.K. Shimanovsky together with Professor V.F. Roughly studied the issues of surgical treatment of traumas of the skull, congenital hernias, cerebellum. In the monograph by Yu.K. Shimanovsky “Operations inside the human body” (1868) developed indications for surgical treatment of intracranial hematomas, described methods for their removal.

In 1895 Professor M.M. Volkovich at the Department of Hospital Surgery for the first time in domestic surgery operated the skeletal defect closure. In the same clinic in 1911 Professor P.S. Babitsky successfully removed a brain tumor. He is the first in our country to start lecturing on neurosurgery for doctors. In 1928 P.S. Babitsky published the monograph “Clinic of Brain Tumors” and in 1930 – “Clinic of Spinal Cord Tumors”.

In the 30-40s of the XX century. at the Department of Hospital Surgery under the direction of Academician, O.P. Crimea began to perform operations extensively on the central and peripheral nervous system. The leading consultants in the treatment of patients with pathology of the nervous system were professors N.M. Lapinsky and later B.M. Mankovsky. At this time, the development of surgical treatment of patients with traumatic brain injury began.

V.M. Shamov, O.P. Krymov, I.M. Ishchenko summarized the experience of assisting with skull and brain injuries during World War I and identified the need for early surgical treatment of craniocerebral injuries in the medical units of the operating armies.

In 1939 at the V session of the Surgical Council Professor I.M. Ishchenko made a report “Principles of pathogenetic therapy of acute brain injury syndromes”. I.M. Ishchenko worked out the problems of surgery of the peripheral nervous system, proved the need for early surgical interventions for inflammatory nerve damage, introduced the method of gangliotomy, radicotomy, and periarterial sympathecotomy.

In the postwar years, some aspects of neurosurgery were taught at the Surgical and Nerve Diseases departments. At the same time, an in-depth study of brain tumor morphology (LI Smirnov, BS Khominsky), clinics and diagnostics of brain and spinal diseases continued (BM Mankovsky, VM Slonimskaya, SM Savenko, LI Cherni), specifies the value of radiological examination in the topical diagnosis of diseases of the nervous system (JI Heinisman).

In 1950, the Kyiv Research Institute of Neurosurgery was established, headed by the academician MN Pupil. Burdenko Professor OI Arutyunov. In a short time, the Institute became a leading scientific, medical and organizational-methodical center, a school of neurosurgeons in Ukraine, which made it possible to expand the study of neurosurgery as a clinical discipline.

On the initiative of the Director of the Kyiv Research Institute of Neurosurgery, Academician A.P. In 1970 Romodanov organized an associate professor’s course at the Department of Neurology of the Kyiv Medical Institute, headed by Ph.D. V.G. Stanislavsky. In 1971, he worked as an assistant professor in the position of assistant professor. Fedenko Yu.Z., since 1973 Palienko GM, since 1978 Boychenko. In 1980, the Department of Neurosurgery was established based on the neurotraumatological Department of the 14th City October Revolution Hospital.

The first head of the department was a student of Academician AP. Romodanov, Doctor of Medicine, Professor Vyacheslav Stanislavsky (1933-1986). V.G. Stanislavsky was a talented neurosurgeon, educator, scientist with deep clinical thinking. His life was cut short during his heyday, June 26, 1986.

In 1986, the Department of Neurosurgery of KMI was headed jointly by the Director of the Kyiv Research Institute of Neurosurgery, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Hero of Socialist Labor, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine, Academician of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, NAS of Ukraine, Russian Academy of Medical Sciences Romodanov (1920–1993). In the same year, she was transferred to the Kyiv Research Institute of Neurosurgery, which made it possible to use the vast experience of the institute to improve the preparation of students, to familiarize them with the latest achievements of modern neurosurgery.

A training and research and production complex “Neurosurgery” was established, which included the Kyiv Research Institute of Neurosurgery, the Department of Neurosurgery of the Kyiv Medical Institute, the Department of Neurosurgery, the Institute for the Improvement of Doctors, and the neurosurgical department of the Emergency Hospital. Since 1986 the main base of scientific research of the department is the newly established department of restorative neurosurgery at that time.

In 1986 the student AP was elected professor of the department. Romodanov MD VI Tsymbalyuk, associate professor of the department – Ph.D. IN Boychenko; Assistants of the department worked as Ph.D. AHEM. Palienko and O.M. Honda.

In 1987, the Department of Neurosurgery Improvement of the Department of Neurosurgery of Ukraine and the USSR republics was organized at the Department of Neurosurgery. Since 1992, the Department of Neurosurgery of the Ukrainian State Medical University (since 1995 – the National Medical University) has become a supporting department in the field of neurosurgery in Ukraine. The task of the department was to prepare students, clinical residencies, graduate students, masters, publishing unified training programs, writing and publishing educational and methodological literature, coordinating and integrating scientific research.

Since 1993, the department has been headed by the student A.P. Romodanov Academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine and Corresponding Member. National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Medicine, Professor, Laureate of two State Prizes, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Vice-President of the Ukrainian Association of Neurosurgeons Vitaliy Tsymbalyuk.

During the 40 years of the department of neurosurgery, 20 doctors and more than 70 candidates of medical sciences were trained, 12 textbooks, 15 manuals, more than 70 monographs, 4 reference books, 1 dictionary, 18 methodological recommendations, 13 information sheets were published. More than 1500 scientific works have been published, more than 170 patents and copyright certificates have been obtained, 80 rationalization proposals have been submitted, and a gold medal of the VDNG of the USSR (1986).
