Assistant Professor of the Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine of the Bogomolets National Medical University Viktoriia Korolenko successfully defended her dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The researcher devoted her qualifying scientific work to a topic that is extremely important for the modern healthcare system – the study of the course of the pandemic of the new coronavirus infection in Ukraine and the improvement of the information and analytical subsystem of epidemiological surveillance for COVID-19. Members of the specialized academic council, chaired by Professor Nazarii Kobyliak, emphasized the relevance of the topic and unanimously awarded the young scientist the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the field of knowledge “Healthcare” with a specialty “Medicine”. Congratulations to Viktoria Korolenko and her scientific supervisor, Associate Professor of the Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine Hennadii Mokhort on a successful result!

 

 

On April 17, the National Medical University named after O.O. Bogomolets hosted Career Guidance Day. This is an event where you could not just hear about specialties, but also experience them in action. Over a thousand students, dozens of specialties, lectures, discussions and lots of practice, where you could literally “try on” the profession for yourself.

The Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine participated actively and in the most practical way possible. Under the leadership of the head of the department, Tetyana Petrusevych, and with the participation of Associate Professor Olena Zublenko, the participants first discussed epidemiology as a profession that changes the health of the world. And then there was practice: hygienic hand washing, working with personal protective equipment, conducting a fit test, and simulating infection transmission. Special attention was paid to practicing communication during immunoprophylaxis.

It is at such moments that theory comes to life! On this day, you could not just listen, but also feel what it’s like to be a doctor in different specialties. And, perhaps, take another step towards your choice!

 

 

On October 15, employees of the Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine took part in the master class “Rules for the Organization and Technique of Vaccinations in Accordance with the Updated Calendar of Preventive Vaccinations in Ukraine. Adverse Events after Immunization and Emergency Care Skills,” organized by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the Center for Public Health of Ukraine, and the World Health Organization.

The event examined key changes in approaches to vaccination, features of organizing vaccinations, responding to adverse events after immunization, and practiced practical skills in providing emergency medical care.

From January 1, 2026, a new order of the Ministry of Health will come into force in Ukraine, which introduces changes to the Calendar of Preventive Vaccinations.

 

 

The Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine of the Bogomolets National Medical University sincerely congratulates the next students on the successful completion of their secondary specialization studies and receiving a certificate of a specialist doctor in the specialty “Epidemiology”. During the training, the participants deepened their professional knowledge and acquired new competencies that will become a reliable basis for their further activities.

Congratulations to the new generation of specialists who have chosen a responsible and extremely important career in the field of public health, the fight against infectious diseases and their prevention.

 

 

As part of the Ukrainian Immunization Week, a thematic session with students was organized from April 27 to May 4. During the session, reports were heard on the importance of vaccination, prevention of infectious diseases, and modern approaches to immunoprophylaxis. Students demonstrated interest in the topic, actively participated in the discussion, asked questions, and expressed their own opinions. The event contributed to raising awareness among future doctors about the role of immunoprophylaxis in maintaining public health.

 

 

On April 4, 2025, the staff of the Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine participated in a conference dedicated to World Health Day, which brought together specialists from various fields of health care. The event became an important platform for professional exchange, discussion of current challenges and establishment of inter-sectoral cooperation. Participation in the conference contributed to increasing the professional competence of teachers and once again emphasized the key role of epidemiology in ensuring the sustainable development of the public health system.

 

 

On March 19, 2025, a scientific and practical conference with international participation “Environmental and hygienic problems of human life” was held at the O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University, in which representatives of the department took part. The topic of the event was dedicated to the consequences of the humanitarian and environmental catastrophe in Ukraine due to the war.

 

In February 2025, an educational event was held at the O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University with the participation of representatives of the World Health Organization Office in Ukraine, during which students joined the interactive workshop-game “One Health Mural”. Participants had the opportunity to get acquainted with the international concept of “One Health”, which provides for an intersectoral approach to preserving the health of people, animals and the environment. The event became an important platform for forming a holistic vision of modern challenges in the field of public health among medical students.

 

 

On February 11, 2025, a student scientific and practical conference “Innovative approaches in scientific research in the field of public health and preventive medicine” was held, dedicated to the first anniversary of the establishment of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Public Health and Preventive Medicine. The event, which was held in a mixed format, was attended by more than 300 teachers and students from four higher medical education institutions of Ukraine. The Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine moderated the section “Epidemic situation in Ukraine in conditions of pandemic and armed conflict”, where current challenges in the field of health were discussed, and students prepared scientific reports and actively participated in the professional discussion.

 

Students from different regions of Ukraine, who for five months persistently mastered the specialization program in the specialty “Epidemiology”, successfully passed the final certification and received certificates of the established sample. Despite the challenges of today, the participants demonstrated a high level of motivation and responsibility in acquiring new professional competencies.

 

The Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine of the Bogomolets National Medical University developed and implemented a new cycle of specialization in the specialty “Disinfection”. Within the first set, 14 epidemiologists from Vinnytsia and Kyiv regions successfully completed the training, the results of which were certified in accordance with the requirements of current educational and qualification standards.

 

On November 3, 2024, the O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University hosted a Career Orientation Day, during which the staff of the Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine gave a lecture “Epidemiology and its Future Potential”. The event was dedicated to the role of epidemiology in the modern healthcare system, in particular, the issues of disease control, epidemic forecasting, and the implementation of innovative approaches to prevention. The lecture aimed to deepen students’ understanding of the importance of this specialty and encourage them to pursue a career in epidemiology as a fundamental component of public health.

 

The department’s staff took part in a meeting with the team of the Public Organization “Coalition for Vaccination” dedicated to the implementation of the project “Building a Sustainable Public Health System”. During the event, they discussed issues of cooperation with our University, which is key to the successful implementation of the project, involving medical students in information and educational campaigns on vaccination, and exchanging experience between the coalition’s specialists and teachers of Bogomolets National Medical University.

 

The Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine of the Bogomolets National Medical University has completed another cycle of thematic improvement “Epidemiological Surveillance of Priority Infectious Diseases” for epidemiologists. The event was attended by 20 doctors from different regions of Ukraine, who underwent training in a mixed format. During the training cycle, participants had the opportunity to update their professional knowledge, obtain new information on modern approaches to epidemiological surveillance, prevention and control of infectious diseases, and also familiarize themselves with the current regulatory and legal aspects of the activities of an epidemiologist in the public health system.

Students from different regions of Ukraine, who studied diligently for 5 months, despite all the difficulties, successfully passed the certification and received a certificate in the specialty “Epidemiology”.

 

The department’s staff participated in the World Health Organization Ukraine seminar on expanding national capabilities and building the capacity of medical professionals to provide services along the front lines, including primary health care services within the framework of humanitarian response in Ukraine.

 

The Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine participated in a two-week internship in Sweden. The internship took place at the School of Public Health and Community Medicine of the University of Gothenburg (Sweden) and included participation in a training course on the development of educational programs for public health specialists for higher education institutions.

 

At the department, interns successfully passed ” Krok-3″ and passed certification in the specialty “Epidemiology”.

 

On May 16, our department traditionally, despite the difficult times of war, joins Vyshyvanka Day, emphasizing its importance for our society.

Assistant Professor of the Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine Viktoriia Korolenko joined the event “IES Conference 2024”, dedicated to the 6th anniversary of the Interventional Epidemiological Service (IES) program, founded by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine together with the State Institution “Public Health Center of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine” and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, USA).

 

The department held a thematic improvement cycle “Modern aspects of infection control in healthcare facilities”. For two weeks, epidemiologists and heads of infection control departments received knowledge on infection control issues. The following topics were covered: organization and implementation of infection control, use of a multimodal strategy in implementing hand hygiene, standard precautions, and epidemiological surveillance of infectious diseases associated with the provision of medical care.

 

Students of the Bogomolets National Medical University at the department study the elective cycle “Clinical Epidemiology and Fundamentals of Vaccination”. The discipline is relevant and important.

 

The staff of the department took part in the Congress on Combating the Spread of Antimicrobial Resistance in Ukraine, which took place on March 1, 2024 in Lviv. “Live” communication with colleagues from different regions of Ukraine cannot be replaced by any video conference!

 

Assistant professor of the Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine Viktoriia Korolenko completed the Instructor Training Program, organized in collaboration with the University of Washington/International Center for Health Education and Training (I-TECH) as part of the international technical assistance project by CH2M HILL, Inc. During the training, which took place in Krakow (Poland), together with colleagues from the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, Public Health Center of Ukraine and the Lviv Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, National Scientific Center «Institute of Experimental and Clinical Veterinary Medicine», and the National University of «Kyiv-Mohyla Academy», they had the opportunity to get acquainted with the reverse teaching methodology, as well as practice and improve practical skills in facilitating interactive lectures, case studies, role-playing and demonstrations.

 

The third graduation of students of the secondary specialization “Epidemiology” has taken place. For 5 months, the students mastered a new specialty. Doctors of various specialties received the second specialization: general hygiene, pediatricians, therapists, endocrinologists and surgeons. During the training, the students studied disciplines on the organization of preventive and anti-epidemic measures, on infection control in Ukrainian healthcare institutions and immunoprophylaxis, on epidemiological surveillance of priority infectious diseases, in particular infections associated with the provision of medical care, Covid-19, hepatitis A, and influenza. The training takes place in a mixed format.

 

On November 23-24, our University hosted a scientific and practical conference of young scientists, the Annual Young Medical Scientists’ Conference–2023, which our department also participated in.

 

At the Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine, doctors specializing in “Epidemiology” successfully passed the certification and received certificates. Students from different parts of Ukraine (Chernihiv, Sumy, Khmelnytskyi, Dnipropetrovsk regions) diligently studied new topics and repeated forgotten material.

In the Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine of the  Bogomolets National Medical University, a meeting of the student scientific group (SSG) was held, dedicated to an important aspect of infection control – hand hygiene. The group members worked out an algorithm for hygienic treatment of hands and removal of medical gloves, which, when working independently, will help them reduce the risk of infection, both for themselves and for patients.

On the Day of Ukrainian writing and language, employees of the department of epidemiology and evidence-based medicine actively participated in the large-scale language flash mob – the All-Ukrainian radio dictation of national unity

 

The cycle of thematic improvement “Epidemiological surveillance of priority infectious diseases” has ended at the department. Students solved situational problems and answered tests, and mastered the Likar_NMU remote platform. It was pleasant and interesting to talk with practical epidemiologists and leading specialists.

 

Viktoriia Korolenko, an assistant at the Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-based Medicine, is involved in teaching in the program of the Interventional Epidemiological Service (IES), founded by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine together with the State University “Center for Public Health of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine” and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States (CDC, USA).

 

Twenty trainees successfully passed the certification and received a certificate of doctor-specialist in the specialty “Epidemiology”. Most of the trainees work as epidemiologists in health care institutions in infection control departments.

 

Based on the Bogomolets National Medical University, under the organization of the Student Scientific Society named after O.A. Kysel, the scientific conference “April Scientific Session 2023” was held. 102 students took part in the conference, which was held online, they showed originality and the ability to justify their research and presented reports in sections.

On the eve of the European Immunization Week, April 24-30, 2023. Head of the Department of Epidemiology of Bogomolets NMU, professor Iryna Kolesnikova opens PedSmart with the presentation of a report on the epidemic situation of vaccine-controlled infections in Ukraine.

On April 6, 2023, an international scientific and practical conference was held for the World Health Day, which this year is dedicated to the 75th anniversary of WHO and is held under the slogan “Health for All”. During the plenary session, the candidate of medical sciences, associate professor of the department of Epidemiology and Evidence Based Science Hennadiy Mohort spoke with the report “Epidemiological effectiveness of vaccinations against COVID-19, Ukraine, 2021-2022”. In his report, he presented the results of a descriptive population study of the effectiveness of vaccinations against COVID-19 in Ukraine, which was based on the analysis of time series of registration indicators, laboratory-confirmed cases of this infection, in particular, the number of hospitalized patients with a diagnosis of COVID-19 depending on the vaccination history.

Since 2023 dpartment’s name officially is Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine.

In 2022, the department celebrated its 90th anniversary.
