The Student Scientific Society of the Department of Oncology was established in 1999. The first group consisted of six student members, and the first chairperson of the society was K.D. Sydorenko (Faculty of Medicine No. 1). The first scientific supervisor of the society was Associate Professor V.Ye. Cheshuk.
The primary objective of establishing the Student Scientific Society was to engage medical students in scientific research and to promote an in-depth understanding of contemporary methods of cancer diagnosis and treatment.
The Society actively collaborates with student scientific societies of other departments, including:
- Department of Radiology and Radiation Medicine;
- Department of Neurosurgery;
- Department of Endocrinology;
- Department of Ophthalmology;
- Department of Surgery No. 2;
- Department of Microbiology;
- and other academic departments of the University.
Through participation in research projects, scientific meetings, seminars, conferences, and interdisciplinary collaborations, members of the Society have the opportunity to develop their research skills, broaden their clinical knowledge, and gain valuable experience in academic and professional communication.

Throughout its history, the Student Scientific Society has been supervised by:

Ihor Mykolaiovych Motuziuk
Ihor Mykolaiovych Motuziuk, MD, PhD, is the current Scientific Supervisor of the Student Scientific Society in Oncology. He is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Oncology, a Consultant Surgical Oncologist of the Highest Qualification Category, the author of more than 110 scientific publications and 40 patents for inventions.
He is currently working on his Doctor of Medical Sciences dissertation entitled:
“Strategies for Optimizing the Surgical Treatment of Patients with Breast Cancer.”
Research Areas of the Student Scientific Society
The Society’s research activities focus on the following areas:
- Elucidation of the pathogenetic mechanisms of malignant neoplasms;
- Improvement of methods for the early diagnosis of major cancer types;
- Investigation of prognostic factors influencing tumor progression and outcomes;
- Tumor immunology and immunotherapy;
- Multiple primary malignancies;
- Current issues in the diagnosis and treatment of lymphoproliferative disorders;
- Management strategies for patients with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer;
- Reconstructive and restorative breast surgery;
- Innovative diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in abdominal oncology.
The Society encourages students to participate actively in scientific research, clinical observations, conference presentations, and collaborative projects, fostering the development of future clinician-scientists and oncology specialists.
Forms of Activity
The Student Scientific Society conducts its activities through a variety of educational, clinical, and research-oriented formats, including:
- Preparation of literature reviews and critical appraisal of recent scientific publications addressing current issues in oncology;
- Conducting independent research projects by student members;
- Presentations and scientific reports at Society meetings, followed by discussion and peer review;
- Organization and moderation of student-led discussion club sessions;
- Participation of Society members in clinical ward rounds and on-call clinical duties;
- Participation in professor- and associate professor-led ward rounds, surgical procedures, dressing changes, and other clinical activities during academic breaks;
- Involvement in clinical case discussions, pathological examinations (autopsies), and laboratory research activities;
- Participation in scientific seminars, forums, conferences, and congresses in Ukraine and abroad;
- Participation in international educational programmes in oncology for medical students and young physicians, including programmes organized by ESMO (European Society for Medical Oncology), ESO (European School of Oncology), EAFO, and ECCO (European Cancer Organisation).
Through these activities, members of the Society gain practical clinical experience, develop research competencies, enhance their presentation and communication skills, and become actively involved in the international oncology community.
A new format of Society meetings has recently been introduced in the form of round-table discussions. This approach enables a greater number of members to participate actively in the preparation and delivery of each session by exploring different aspects of a common topic through multiple presentations.
As a result, a larger number of participants become involved in the discussion process, meetings are conducted in a more structured and interactive manner, a broader range of issues can be addressed, and consensus-based conclusions can be reached more effectively. This initiative has received strong support from Society members and will continue to be developed in the future.
Each year, research conducted by Society members is published in the Ukrainian Scientific Medical Youth Journal (a peer-reviewed scientific journal recognized by the Attestation Board of Ukraine), the journal Clinical Oncology, and other professional scientific journals in Ukraine and abroad.
The Department actively encourages students to engage in scientific publishing and academic dissemination of research findings, thereby fostering the development of future researchers, clinicians, and leaders in oncology.

Each year, members of the Student Scientific Society actively participate in national and international scientific and educational events, presenting research findings and expanding their professional knowledge in oncology and related disciplines.

Participation in these conferences and educational programmes provides students with opportunities to present research findings, engage with leading experts, develop professional networks, and gain insight into contemporary advances in oncology, translational research, and cancer care.
Meetings and Collaboration
Each member of the Student Scientific Society follows an individual schedule of scientific and clinical activities tailored to their research interests and ongoing projects.
General meetings of the Society are held one to two times per month at the National Cancer Institute, located at 33/43 Lomonosova Street, Kyiv, Ukraine.
