Student Scientific Group of the Department of Physiology

The Student Scientific Group of the Department of Physiology at Bogomolets National Medical University operates under the supervision of Klavdiia Vasylivna Nesvitailova, PhD in Medicine, Senior Lecturer, and Olena Oleksandrivna Vynohradova‑Anyk, Acting Head of the Department, Associate Professor.

 

History and Distinguished Alumni

The group has an almost century‑long history, beginning its activity in the 1920s—initially as part of the theoretical medicine section, and later as an independent unit of student scientific work. Over the decades, it has trained many prominent scientists who went on to lead departments and research teams in Ukraine and abroad. Among them:

Areas of Activity

Theoretical Direction

Covers modern topics in neurophysiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmacology, cardiology, endocrinology, and radiology.

Practical Direction

Includes workshops and master classes; laboratory research at the department and leading scientific institutions in Kyiv; interdepartmental projects and joint practical sessions.

 

Annual Highlights

  • EEG Master Class— studying the principles of recording and interpreting brain activity.
  • Interdepartmental meeting on sports physiologyin collaboration with the Department of Pharmacology.
  • Workshop “X‑ray Image Analysis”in cooperation with the Department of Radiology.

 

Presentation Topics of the Past Year

Hepatobiliary system; hormones and sleep regulation; oxytocin and social behavior; ghrelin and leptin; effects of thyroid hormones on cognitive function; endocrine dysfunction in diabetes (incretin effect); neural connectivity; electrophysiology; blood cell morphology; auditory pathways; structure and function of the retina.

Olympiads and Competitions

All‑Ukrainian Student Olympiad in Physiology, 2025–2026 academic year

  • 3rd place:Alona Serbina; Viktoriia Drivinska; Anna Titenko

Conferences and Scientific Presentations

Members regularly present at student and scientific conferences at NMU and international student forums; several presentations were delivered in English.
Topics covered interdisciplinary fields, leading to invitations for interdepartmental collaboration and further publication activity.

Other Achievements

  • More than 70 active membersin the 2025–2026 academic year.
  • Students participate in research at the department’s laboratories, the O.O. Bohomolets Institute of Physiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and the Institute of Pathology Problems.
  • Many members contribute to the preparation of scientific articles and abstracts.

In the department’s laboratories and leading scientific institutions in Kyiv, in clinical and theoretical departments of NMU; in research centers in Ukraine and abroad.
The group maintains active collaboration with the Departments of Pharmacology, Radiology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, General Psychology, Pathophysiology, and Biochemistry.
