Yaroslav Mykhailovych Susak – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Head of the Department of Surgery with a Course of Emergency and Vascular Surgery at the O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University.

1987 – 1988 – internship in “Surgery” at the Emergency Hospital of Kyiv.

1988 – 1991 – worked as a surgeon at Polyclinic No. 4 of the Leningrad District of Kyiv.

Since 1991 – senior laboratory assistant, since 1993 – assistant, from 1998 to 2006 – Associate Professor of the Department of General Surgery No. 1 at the O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University.

2006 – 2019 – Professor of the Department of Surgery at the Faculty of Dentistry of O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University.

Since 1998, he has held the highest qualification category in “Surgery.”

In 1997, he defended his PhD thesis on the topic “The Role of Biliary Microlithiasis in the Choice of Treatment Tactics for Acute Recurrent Pancreatitis.”

In 2004, he defended his Doctoral thesis on the topic “Diagnosis and Treatment of Non-inflammatory Pancreatic Diseases Complicated by Jaundice.”

Under the supervision of Professor Susak, 10 PhD dissertations have been defended.

Co-author of 4 textbooks, 25 patents, and 220 scientific publications.

Since 2008, he has been the clinical head of the specialized department of liver, biliary tract, and pancreatic surgery at Kyiv City Emergency Hospital.

In 2019, he was elected Head of the Department of Surgery No. 4, now reorganized into the Department of Surgery with a Course of Emergency and Vascular Surgery.

In 2022, he completed courses on the organization of transplant care for the population.

ANATOLIY OLEKSIYOVYCH BURKA – Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Surgery with a course of emergency and vascular surgery at O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University.
Born on July 5, 1941, in the village of Rahivka, Polissya District, Kyiv Region.
In 1964, he graduated from Kyiv Medical Institute.

From 1964 to 1966, he worked as a lecturer in surgery at Chornobyl Medical College and as a resident in the surgery department of the Central District Hospital, while also serving as an inter-district forensic expert.
He has been working at the Department of Surgery since 1966, first as a postgraduate student, then as an assistant, associate professor, and professor.

In 1969, Burka defended his Ph.D. dissertation on “Materials on the State of Coagulation and Anticoagulation Systems of Blood and Thromboelastography in Patients with Acute Cholecystitis.”
From 1969 to 1971, he combined his work as an assistant with work in the Scientific Medical Council of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
In 1972, he graduated with honors from Kyiv Institute of Patent Studies.

From 1981 to 1998, Burka served as Deputy Dean for Research at the 2nd Medical Faculty.
In 1984, he defended his doctoral dissertation on “Surgical Treatment of Patients with Cholecystitis with Accompanying Diseases and Complications.”

Burka A.O. is the author of 226 scientific works, 7 methodological recommendations, 8 inventions, 13 rationalization proposals, and is a co-author of monographs, lectures on hospital surgery (volumes I, II, III), and the textbook “Surgery” (volumes II, III).

Professor Burka A.O. is a highly skilled surgeon who has made significant contributions to healthcare in the field of abdominal surgery. He has improved methods of surgery on the stomach, intestines, liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, and pancreas, as well as methods for treating peritonitis, intestinal fistulas, and infected wounds. The introduction of these developments into practice has significantly improved the effectiveness of treating severe diseases. He worked under the guidance of professors M.M. Kovalyov and V.M. Korotkyi, and academicians O.O. Shalimov and M.N. Malynovsky, whom he considers his teachers and to whom he is deeply grateful. A.O. Burka is a model teacher and educator, and thousands of his former students are now working in practical healthcare, with many having become professors, directors, and corresponding members of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, applying the knowledge they gained from Professor Burka in their teaching, research, and medical work.

Burka A.O. has frequently spoken at national conferences, meetings of the Kyiv and Kyiv region surgical society, and educational-methodological conferences. He has also been a participant in the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy of Ukraine, where he was awarded a first-degree diploma.
In 1998, Burka was invited to the position of professor, where he continues to work to this day.

Professor Burka A.O. is a member of the boards of the scientific surgical societies of Ukraine, Kyiv, and Kyiv region, and the editorial board of the journal “Surgery of Ukraine.” He was the chairman of the Approbation Board on “General Issues of Surgery” for over 30 years and the chairman of the Central Methodological Commission on surgical disciplines for 19 years. He is also the head of the audit commission of the Association of Surgeons of Ukraine.

For his fruitful work for the benefit of humanity and the state, Burka A.O. has been awarded numerous honors and certificates of appreciation. He has received honorary certificates from the Kyiv City State Administration, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, and the Kyiv City Mayor, as well as the “In Memory of the 1500th Anniversary of Kyiv” medal and the “Veteran of Labor” medal. For his contributions to higher education, Burka A.O. was awarded the “For Excellent Success in Work” badge. In 2012, the International Academy of Rating Technologies and Sociology “Golden Fortune” awarded him the “Labor Glory” medal. On June 7, 2013, Professor Burka A.O. was honored with a certificate of blessing for his diligent work for the glory of the Holy Church by Metropolitan Volodymyr, Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. In 2016, he was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for his significant personal contribution to the establishment and strengthening of Ukraine’s national security. In 2018, he was awarded the “National Tribute to Ukrainian Scientists 1918–2018” medal.

KOSTYANTYN VOLODYMYROVYCH RUDENKO – Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Surgery with a course of emergency and vascular surgery at O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University, Deputy Director for Medical and Coordination Work at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after M.M. Amosov of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.
Born on November 27, 1975, in Kyiv.
In 1999, he graduated from O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University with a degree in “Medicine.”

From 1999 to 2001, he completed an internship at the Department of Surgery No. 4 at O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University.
From 1999 to 2004, he worked as a cardiac surgeon in the Department of Surgical Methods for Treating Congenital Heart Defects in Young Children at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.

From 2001 to 2002, he worked at Ospidale Riuniti (Bergamo, Italy) and simultaneously studied at the International Heart School in Bergamo, Italy. After completing the course, he defended his scientific work “Surgical Treatment of Various Forms of Atrioventricular Canal” at the University of Pisa, Italy.
In 2003, he received a certificate in the specialty of “Cardiovascular Surgery.”
From 2003 to 2004, he pursued distance education at the European School for Cardiothoracic Surgery.

From 2004 to 2010, he served as Deputy Chief Physician for Medical Work at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after M.M. Amosov.
In 2007, Rudenko defended his Ph.D. dissertation on “Surgical Treatment of the Complete Form of Atrioventricular Septal Defect.”

From 2008 to 2010, he was an external student at the Faculty of Public Administration at the National Academy of Public Administration under the President of Ukraine, earning a master’s degree in public administration.
In 2009, he completed training in Singapore under the Hospital Management program (Singapore Cooperation Programme).

Since 2010, he has been the head of the department of surgical treatment of heart failure and mechanical support of the heart and lungs at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after M.M. Amosov.
In 2010, he completed the INSEAD European Health Leadership Programme in Fontainebleau, France.

In 2013, Rudenko defended his doctoral dissertation on “Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy: Issues of Diagnosis and Treatment.”
In 2014, he was awarded the academic title of Senior Research Fellow.

Since May 2014, he has served as the Chief Cardiac Surgeon of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and an expert of the Ministry of Health in the specialties of “Cardiology, Heart and Major Vessel Surgery,” and “Transplantology.”
In October 2015, he was elected as an advisor to the All-Ukrainian Association of Local Government Bodies “Ukrainian Association of District and Regional Councils.”

In January 2017, he was appointed Deputy Director for Medical and Coordination Work at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after M.M. Amosov.
Rudenko holds the highest qualification category in “Heart and Major Vessel Surgery” and “Healthcare Management.”

Together with the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after M.M. Amosov, the Association of Cardiovascular Surgeons of Ukraine, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, and the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, Rudenko initiated and organized the national project “Stop the Epidemic of Cardiovascular Catastrophes.”

Rudenko is a full member of the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgeons and a board member of the Association of Cardiovascular Surgeons of Ukraine.
In 2010, the Presidium of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine awarded Rudenko the Academic Prize for Young Scientists for a series of scientific works “Modern Perspectives on the Development and Treatment of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy.”

In 2018, he was awarded the Mykola Strazhesko Medal by the Association of Cardiologists of Ukraine for his contributions to preventing sudden cardiac death.
In 2019, he was awarded the M.M. Amosov Medal by the Presidium of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine for developing and implementing a new method for treating hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
In 2019, he was also awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology for his work “Prevention of Cardio-Cerebral Complications and Sudden Death” and received the honorary title of “Honored Scientist and Technologist of Ukraine.”

Rudenko has participated in numerous international congresses and conferences. He actively contributes to the development and implementation of new methods for treating congenital and acquired heart defects, especially in reconstructive cardiac surgery. He is one of the leading specialists in Ukraine in the diagnosis and treatment of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and the prevention of sudden cardiac death.

In 2017, he was invited to the position of professor at the department.
He is the author and co-author of 142 scientific papers and 11 inventions.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSORS OF THE DEPARTMENT

LEONID YURIYOVYCH MARKULAN – Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Surgery with a course of emergency and vascular surgery at O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University. He is responsible for the scientific work of the department.
Born on February 25, 1955, in Kyiv.

After completing secondary school, he worked as a paramedic for an emergency medical service for a year. In 1973, he entered O.O. Bohomolets Kyiv Medical Institute, graduating with honors in 1979, specializing in “Medicine.”

During his studies at the institute, from 1974 to 1976, he worked as a laboratory assistant at the Institute of Oncology Problems of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, and from 1978 to 1979, as a paramedic at the Kyiv Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery.
After graduating from the medical institute in 1979, Markulan was appointed as a surgeon at the Kyiv Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery. From 1981, he worked as a junior researcher in the Department of Cardiac and Microvascular Surgery, from 1982 in the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, and from 1991, as a researcher.

In 1990, Markulan defended his Ph.D. dissertation on surgery titled “Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment of Chronic Duodenal Obstruction.”
He holds the highest medical qualification in “Surgery.”

He performs surgeries of the highest level of complexity and implements modern surgical methods, particularly in abdominal surgery.
In 1998, he was appointed as an assistant at the department, and since November 2004, he has held the position of associate professor at the same department. In 2006, he was awarded the academic title of “Associate Professor.”
He regularly conducts practical classes with students and fulfills his teaching duties in full.
He is responsible for the scientific work of the department and is a member of the Approbation Council on “General Issues of Surgery.”
He participates in the preparation of the department’s work and educational programs.

During his work, Markulan has published over 200 scientific papers, including co-authorship of the textbook “General Surgery,” two volumes of the educational manual “Lectures on Hospital Surgery,” and the “Surgery Practicum – Module 1, 2, 4.” He holds 28 authorship certificates for inventions. He has prepared lectures on the topics of “Differential Diagnosis of Acute Abdomen,” “Acute Abdomen: Treatment Tactics,” “Surgical Diseases of the Endocrine System,” “Post-resection and Post-vagotomy Syndromes,” “Acute Appendicitis,” and “Acute Peritonitis.”

His scientific research covers a wide range of issues related to acute and chronic pathology of the digestive organs and vascular pathology.
He is working on his doctoral dissertation on “Diagnosis, Treatment, and Prevention of Gastric Bleeding in Patients with Complicated Ischemic Heart Disease.”

For his fruitful scientific work, he was awarded the O. Boychenko Prize. Associate Professor Markulan received distinctions from the Kyiv City Mayor in 2005 and 2007. VICTOR MYKHAILOVYCH SELYUK – Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Surgery with a course of emergency and vascular surgery at O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University.
Born on April 1, 1961, in Chernihiv region.
In 1984, he graduated with honors from the Medical Faculty of Kyiv Medical Institute, specializing in “Medicine.”

After graduating from the institute, from 1984 to 1998, he worked at the Kyiv Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine: from 1984 to 1991 as a surgeon, and from 1991 to 1998 as a researcher in the Department of Microsurgery and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery.
In 1998, he defended his Ph.D. dissertation titled “Reconstructive Microsurgery in the Functional Rehabilitation of Patients with Defects and Scar Deformations of the Plantar Surface of the Foot.”

In 1994, Selyuk underwent training at the Surgical Clinic of the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna. From 1994 to 2001, he participated in a joint scientific project between the Department of Vascular Surgery at the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna, the Kyiv Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, and the Institute of Physiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, focused on studying ischemia-reperfusion injury of tissues in vascular pathology.

In 1998, Selyuk was invited to the position of an assistant, and since 2003, he has been working as an associate professor at the department.
During his work at the clinic and the department, he established himself as a qualified surgeon and capable educator.

He holds the highest qualification category in “Cardiovascular Surgery.”
He performs surgeries of the highest complexity and introduces modern surgical methods into practice.
Selyuk has published over 250 scientific works and holds 23 authorship certificates for inventions and 18 rationalization proposals. He is a co-author of the following textbooks: the educational manual “Lectures on Hospital Surgery” in three volumes and the “Surgery Practicum – Module 1, 2, 4.”

OLEG VALERIYOVYCH BALABAN – Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Surgery with a course of emergency and vascular surgery at O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University, Honored Doctor of Ukraine.
Born on June 1, 1966.
In 1983, he graduated from secondary school No. 236 in Kyiv, and in 1991, he graduated from the Medical Faculty of Kyiv Medical Institute.

From 1992, he worked as a resident surgeon in the surgery department of the Kyiv Regional Clinical Hospital.
From 1995 to 1997, he studied in clinical residency at the Department of Surgery No. 2 at the Kyiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education.

Since 1998, Balaban has worked as an assistant, and since 2008, as an associate professor at the department.
In 2002, he defended his Ph.D. dissertation titled “Surgical Treatment of Cosmetic Defects of the Anterior Abdominal Wall in Patients with Obesity of Grades II–III.”

He is the author and co-author of 181 scientific papers and holds 19 declarative patents for inventions. Associate Professor Balaban is also a co-author of the educational manual “Surgery Practicum – Module 1, 4.”
His scientific research focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of acute pancreatitis, peptic ulcer disease of the stomach and duodenum, gallstone disease, and issues of plastic and reconstructive surgery.

Since 1996, Balaban has worked as a surgeon at the Kyiv Regional Clinical Hospital, where he continues to work to this day. Balaban is a surgeon of the highest category.
His main areas of expertise include hernia repair of the anterior abdominal wall of varying complexity, proctological surgeries (surgical treatment of hemorrhoids, anal fissures, paraproctitis), surgical treatment of varicose veins of the lower extremities, and reconstructive and aesthetic surgeries. He is a leading specialist in laparoscopic and minimally invasive interventions.

In 2015, he received specialization in oncological surgery. He is involved in the surgical treatment of tumors of the skin, soft tissues, mammary glands, gastrointestinal tract, and pelvic organs.
He actively participates in scientific-practical conferences on surgery and related specialties.

For his productive work, Balaban has repeatedly received honorary certificates, letters of appreciation, and valuable gifts from the Kyiv City Mayor and the Chief Health Administration of Kyiv.
In 2013, he was awarded the Order of St. Vladimir of the Kyiv Patriarchate.

 Leshhyshyn

IVAN MYKHAILOVYCH LESHYSHYN – Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Surgery with a course of emergency and vascular surgery at O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University.
Born on June 14, 1963, in Lviv region.

After graduating from secondary school in 1980, he entered the Lviv Medical Institute, which he graduated from in 1986. From 1986 to 1990, he worked as a surgeon at the surgical department of the Seredyna-Buda Central District Hospital in Sumy region.
From 1990 to 1993, Leshyshyn studied in clinical residency at O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University, based at the Department of Faculty Surgery No. 1. After completing his residency, he worked as a surgeon at the Territorial Medical Association of the Soviet District of Kyiv (Hospital No. 22, now Hospital No. 18) and simultaneously as an assistant at the Department of Faculty Surgery No. 1 of O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University.

In 2000, Professor Leshyshyn was invited to the position of assistant at the Department of Surgery No. 4, where he has been working as an associate professor since 2009.
He is a surgeon of the highest category.

Associate Professor Leshyshyn actively works on the problems of abdominal surgery, the treatment of chronic constipation, emergency surgery, bariatric surgery, abdominal hernia repairs, diaphragmatic hernias, achalasia of the cardia, simultaneous surgeries on abdominal organs, and pelvic floor muscle weakness treatment.

His scientific work is also active. In 2008, he defended his Ph.D. dissertation on “Comprehensive Treatment and Prevention of Erosive-Ulcerative Acute Gastro-Duodenal Bleeding in Patients with Myocardial Infarction.”
Associate Professor Leshyshyn is the co-author of 17 patents and around 70 articles, as well as educational manuals such as “Surgery Practicum – Module 1, 4.”

Gonza

ROMAN VOLODYMYROVYCH HONZA – Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Surgery with a course of emergency and vascular surgery at O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University. He is responsible for the educational-methodological work of the department.
Born on December 26, 1978, in Kyiv.

In 1993, he graduated from secondary school No. 238 in Kyiv, and in 1996, he completed Kyiv Medical College No. 4. That same year, he entered O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University, from which he graduated in 2002.
From 2002 to 2004, he completed an internship at the Department of Surgery No. 4 of O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University.

In 2002, Honza was appointed to the position of senior laboratory assistant at the department, and since 2005, he has worked as an assistant.
Since 2009, he has been responsible for the educational-methodological work of the department.
Since 2004, Honza has worked as a surgeon at the Kyiv City Clinical Hospital, where he continues to practice.

In 2008, Honza defended his Ph.D. dissertation on “Surgical Correction of Cosmetic Defects of the Breasts.”
On October 10, 2010, he was appointed to the position of associate professor of the department, and on September 23, 2014, he was awarded the academic title of associate professor of the Department of Surgery.

He actively participates in the department’s main scientific developments, particularly in the treatment of cosmetic defects of the head, body, and limbs, as well as in modern methods of diagnosing and treating diseases of the abdominal organs (liver, bile ducts, pancreas, stomach, and intestines).
He has published 125 scientific works and holds 21 declarative patents for inventions. Associate Professor Honza is also a co-author of the educational manual “Surgery Practicum – Module 1, 2, 4.”

BORIS MYKHAILOVYCH KOVAL – Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Surgery with a course of emergency and vascular surgery at O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University.
Born on January 11, 1979.

He began his professional career in 1999 while still studying, working as a medical assistant in the cardioreanimation department at the N.D. Strazhesko Institute of Cardiology.
After graduating from O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University, he completed an internship in surgery at the Department of Surgery No. 4 (2002–2004).

From 2004 to 2006, he studied and worked in clinical residency in the departments of cardiovascular and general surgery at Oleksandrivska Clinical Hospital in Kyiv and as a surgeon in the department of surgery and the center for surgical hematology at Kyiv Municipal Clinical Hospital No. 9.

From 2006 to 2014, he worked as an assistant, and since 2014, he has been an associate professor at the Department of Surgery with a course of emergency and vascular surgery at O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University.
From 2015 to 2019, he served as the head of the trade union of the 2nd Medical Faculty at O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University.
He conducts practical classes for 6th-year students and delivers lectures.

Since 2002, he has actively participated in scientific-practical conferences on vascular and reconstructive surgery, phlebology, and issues related to providing specialized surgical care in wartime conditions.
Since 2008, he has participated in international clinical research.

In 2011, Koval defended his Ph.D. dissertation on “Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment of Chronic Critical Lower Limb Ischemia in Patients with Type II Diabetes Mellitus.”
He is the author and co-author of 111 scientific publications, including 14 patents for inventions, 4 textbooks, 2 methodological recommendations, and 1 book, most of which are dedicated to vascular surgery.

Since 2012, Koval has been the secretary of the scientific-practical journal “Surgery of Ukraine.”
He holds the second qualification category in “Surgery” and “Vascular Surgery” and has received specialization in ultrasound diagnostics.

In his practical work, Koval performs surgeries for acute and chronic diseases of peripheral arteries (obliterating atherosclerosis, endarteritis, thromboses, and embolisms). He is also involved in treating chronic venous diseases and their complications, including venous thromboses, and performs both open and modern endovenous treatments for chronic venous conditions.

Since 2006, his primary practical work has been conducted in the vascular surgery clinic at the National Military Medical Clinical Center “GVKG.” He also actively provides practical and consultative services in vascular surgery at clinics in Kyiv, including the Surgery Department of the Central Hospital of the Security Service of Ukraine (2011–2012, later as an external consultant), the State Enterprise MNPO “Medbud” (since 2013), and the Scientific-Practical Center for Neurorehabilitation “NODUS” (since 2015), as well as the “Oxford Medical” clinic (since 2016).

In August 2014, Koval was dispatched to Kharkiv to the Military Medical Clinical Center of the Northern Region of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine as part of a reinforcement team to provide assistance to those wounded in the ATO zone.

He graduated from the Medical Faculty of Sumy State University in 2002.

From 2002 to 2004, he completed an internship at the Department of Thoraco-Abdominal Surgery at Kharkiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education, specializing in “Surgery.”

Since 1979, she worked at Clinical Hospital No. 7 as a nurse in the pulmonology department, and since 1983, she worked as a nurse in the 2nd department at the Kyiv Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery (manipulation room nurse, ward nurse, and nurse in the purulent dressing room).
In 1998, she was invited to the position of laboratory assistant with a medical education at the Department of Surgery with a Course of Emergency and Vascular Surgery at O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University, where she continues to work to this day.
