HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The history of the Department of PHYSICAL REHABILITATION AND SPORTS MEDICINE begins with the training course “Medical Control and Therapeutic Physical Education” at the Department of Physical Education since 1929. This course was led by Associate Professor L.O. Fink. This period is characterized by the scientific formation of medical control and therapeutic physical education as a discipline.
Since 1936, the course was led by Professor V.A. Blyakh, classes with medical students were held only in clinical departments. In fact, until 1944, the methodological justification of the subject and its place in the system of a higher medical institution was taking place. During these years, the course staff studied the dynamics of physical development of individuals of different age groups engaged in physical exercises, the role of physical exercises in restoring functions in women in the postpartum period.
From 1944 to 1952, the combined Department of Physical Education with the course of medical control and therapeutic physical education was headed by Associate Professor I.A. Elgard. During this period, the Department conducted scientific work in the field of medical control over the physical education of students of the Medical Institute.
From 1952 to 1955, the department was headed by Associate Professor N.Z. Korablev. During this period, questions on the appointment of therapeutic physical education in the complex treatment of patients were introduced into the final exam papers for subordinators. It was in 1952 that the subordinatorship for medical control and therapeutic physical education was first opened, among the graduates of which was the future famous scientist, Professor I.V. Muravov.
From 1955 to 1956, the course of medical control and therapeutic physical education at the Department of Physical Education was led by the famous trainer V.V. Petrovsky
The next stage in the history of the department, which can be clearly distinguished, begins from 1957 to 1969, when Professor G.Y. Krasnoselsky came to lead the department. From that time on, the course of medical control and therapeutic physical education was separated into a separate clinical department. Practical classes on medical control during this period were held on the basis of the sports building of the medical institute, and on therapeutic physical education in the best therapeutic, surgical and pediatric clinics of the city of Kyiv.
During this period, 13 candidate dissertations in the specialty “Sports Medicine and Therapeutic Physical Education” were completed and defended at the department. The scientific direction of the department is “Clinical and physiological substantiation of the mechanisms of therapeutic physical education”.
From 1969 to 1996, the department was headed by Dr. Med. Sci., Professor G.V. Polesia, Dr. Med. Sci., Professor L.A. Pyrig, Associate Professor M.M. Solovtsov, Dr. Med. Sci. G.L. Apanasenko, Professor V.P. Murza. The staff of the department was renewed. Therapists, surgeons, pediatricians and other specialists with experience in scientific work came to work at the department. The main scientific directions of the department were “Research on the physical performance of students and the influence of intense muscular activity on it.” “Organization, content and effectiveness of rehabilitation treatment of patients with cardiological and orthopedic-traumatological profiles.” Based on the materials of these works, the monograph Apanasenko G.L., Volkov V.V., Naumenko R.G. “Physical therapy for diseases of the cardiovascular system”, Kyiv, “Zdorovya”, 1987 and a chapter in the “Handbook of physical therapy”, Moscow, “Medicine”, 1987 were published.
Since 1996, the course has received the status of a clinical department “Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine”, headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor V.A. Shapovalova. The staff of the department has made a significant contribution to scientific medical problems related to the study of the physiological support of the body’s activity in children and adolescents under the influence of dosed physical exertion. The “Scholar” program has been implemented in all regions and oblasts of Ukraine, on the basis of which a computer database of the dynamics of the physical health of children and youth has been created. In addition, the results of scientific developments by V.A. Shapovalova on improving the health of children in school conditions have been included in the programs of postgraduate education for teachers. The author’s program “Scholar” by V.A. Shapovalova was included in the State Program “Health of the Nation” until 2011.
In 2008, it was renamed the Department of “Physical Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine”.
From 2010 to 2016, the department was headed by Candidate of Medical Sciences V.V. Volkov, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor L.V. Dudar, the acting head of the department was Candidate of Medical Sciences, Associate Professor V.V. Chernyavsky.
From 2017 to the present, the department has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor, Doctor of the highest category, Honored Worker of Physical Culture and Sports – Olena Dorofieieva.
Since 2017, the department has been a graduate department in specialty 227 “Therapy and Rehabilitation”. The head of the department, Professor O. Dorofieieva, is the guarantor of the educational program for the training of specialists of the second (master’s) level of higher education, and Associate Professor O. Glynyana is the guarantor of the educational program for the training of specialists of the first (bachelor’s) level of higher education.
Students are trained at 17 clinical bases of the department, with which the department has cooperation agreements, 6 of which are military hospitals and military rehabilitation centers.
The professorial and teaching staff of the department constantly improve their qualifications through internships not only in Ukraine but also abroad under the Erasmus+ and USAID programs. The department has joint projects on academic mobility of students and teachers under the Erasmus+ and TecRe programs with the Satakunta University of Applied Sciences (SAMU) in the city of Pori.
During its independent existence, the department has carried out 16 research projects of a rehabilitation profile aimed at identifying the functional reserves of student youth for motivation to a healthy lifestyle; prevention and development of pathological processes; development of comprehensive physical therapy programs for patients with chronic ischemic heart disease; nonspecific lung diseases, patients who have suffered a myocardial infarction, stroke; patients with overweight and obesity; patients with diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system and nervous system.
The department trains interns in the field of physical rehabilitation medicine. In addition, the scientific and pedagogical staff of the department participate not only in the training of students and interns. Since 2021, the department has been conducting courses on secondary specialization in the field of “physician of physical and rehabilitation medicine”, and since 2024 – in the fields of “Physical Therapy” and “Ergotherapy”.
