Student research is one of the most important means of enhancing the quality of professional training in higher education. At the SSC, future professionals acquire research skills.
The main objectives of the student research group are:
- organization of student research activities;
- in-depth study of a chosen topic by students;
- involvement of students in the department’s research areas;
- development of scientific and research competencies among students;
- engagement of students in scientific conferences, seminars, forums, competitions, and other research and outreach events;
- discussion of theoretical issues and conducting research projects;
- familiarization with the methodology of planning and conducting experiments;
- practical workshops.
Meetings are held once a month in a hybrid format according to an approved schedule; they focus on research activities and topical issues in modern pediatrics, and include joint meetings of SSC from various departments as well as conferences.

During clinical rounds, student club members focus on diagnostic issues in clinical cases, formulating patient examination plans, discussing research methods, clinical pharmacology, and modern diagnostic technologies.

In 2024, a joint meeting of the student scientific circles of the Department of Pediatrics No. 2 and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology No. 2 of Bogomolets National Medical University took place. The event was dedicated to HIV infection in obstetrics and neonatology.

In 2024, a joint meeting was also held by the student scientific circles of the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology No. 3 and Pediatrics No. 2 at Bogomolets National Medical University. Participating students deepened their knowledge on the topic “Specifics of neonatal care for infants born small for gestational age,” presented informative reports, and received professional advice from experienced specialists.

On April 17–18, 2024, the National Medical University hosted an online scientific-practical conference with international participation titled “What Happened to Children’s Health During the War,” dedicated to the memory of the prominent Ukrainian pediatrician and Academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS) of Ukraine, V.H. Maidannyk. Based on the evaluation of student research papers in the “Clinical Case” category of the Ukrainian-language section, the 1st place diploma was awarded to Maryam Khalilova, a 5th-year student of Medical Faculty No. 2 and head of the student research group, for her paper “Congenital Pulmonary Airway Malformation as a Cause of Neonatal Respiratory Distress” (Department of Pediatrics No. 2; academic supervisor: Associate Professor T.I. Shevtsova; Head of Department: Corresponding Member of NAMS of Ukraine O.P. Volosovets). In the English-language student section, the 2nd place diploma was awarded to Amrita Gargi (India), a 5th-year student of Medical Faculty No. 2 and a member of the Department of Pediatrics No. 2 research group, for her paper “Clinical Case of Pallister-Killian Syndrome” (Department of Pediatrics No. 2; academic supervisor: Associate Professor T.I. Joint meeting of student scientific circles of the Department of Pediatrics No. 2 and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology No. 2 (December 2025)
A joint meeting of the student scientific circles from two departments—the Department of Pediatrics No. 2 and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology No. 2 of Bogomolets National Medical University—was held at Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 3. The event focused on the topic “Obstetric and Perinatal Aspects of Preterm Birth.”
Preterm birth is one of the most pressing issues in perinatal medicine, as it remains a leading cause of maternal and perinatal mortality worldwide. This issue attracts significant attention due to the serious consequences for both the mother and the newborn. Prematurity is a major cause of morbidity, leading to complex, long-term health problems in children—such as cerebral palsy, vision and hearing impairments, digestive issues (necrotizing enterocolitis), developmental delays, and infections—and carries significant social implications.
Students in years 1 through 6 from the Educational and Scientific Institute of Bogomolets National Medical University participated in the meeting, which was held in an in-person format.
The meeting was opened by the supervisors of the departments’ student research groups: Associate Professor Tetiana Shevtsova and Assistant Nataliia Skuriatina. Student members prepared insightful presentations on the following topics: “Preterm Birth: Modern Management Recommendations” (sixth-year student Iryna Teleha); “Steroid Prophylaxis for Respiratory Disorders and Fetal Neuroprotection” (sixth-year student Khrystyna Buniak); “Modern Approaches to Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition for Preterm Infants” (Anastasiia Kliukovska and Emiliia Tsendra, 5th year); and “Thermoregulation in Preterm Infants: Hypothermia Prevention and the Kangaroo Care Method” (Mariia Borshchevska and Sofiia Smienova, 3rd year).
The presentations focused primarily on assessing clinical symptoms during pregnancy (such as regular contractions after 22 weeks, changes in secretions, and alterations in fetal movement) and the condition of the cervix; the use of tocolytic medications (e.g., nifedipine, atosiban) to delay labor by 48 hours—allowing time for steroid prophylaxis against fetal respiratory distress syndrome (using betamethasone or dexamethasone to accelerate fetal lung maturation, thereby significantly improving survival chances and reducing complications); and various management strategies for preterm infants (including delivery assistance, respiratory support, maintaining thermal stability, ensuring adequate nutrition, and providing follow-up care tailored to gestational age). The master class “Insertion of an Obstetric Pessary,” conducted by Nataliia Skuriatina—head of the Student Scientific Group at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology No. 2—sparked interest among student members and fostered motivation for scientific and practical work in the fields of obstetrics and neonatology. During the session, students gained theoretical knowledge (covering types of obstetric pessaries, indications, contraindications, timing of insertion, and pessary care) and practiced the skills required to insert an obstetric support pessary.
Participants once again expressed their conviction that joint meetings between related departments are vital for developing clinical thinking and motivating students to pursue creative scientific inquiry in the future.

Publication of research articles
co-authored with students at the Department of Pediatrics No. 2 (2025–2026 academic year).
Collaboration between faculty and students on writing research articles aims to develop research skills and foster career growth, while providing practical experience, enhancing portfolios, and preparing for future academic endeavors. Co-authoring research articles with students is feasible provided there is a research supervisor (or a co-author holding an advanced academic degree) and that ethical standards and formatting requirements are met.
In the process of preparing a research article, students learn to think analytically, process research findings, and draft academic texts in accordance with established requirements. A published article represents a significant achievement on a CV, boosting prospects for admission to master’s or doctoral programs and enhancing employability. Joint publications can lead to conference invitations and future collaborations with other researchers. Furthermore, publication helps deepen the research and provides a better understanding of the academic work process.
For faculty members, high-quality joint publications elevate their standing within the scientific community and help promote their ideas while strengthening their academic reputation. Assisting students with publication is a key component of academic mentorship. Additionally, publishing articles enables both faculty and students to access grants, international programs, scholarships, and investment opportunities.
In 2025, the Department of Pediatrics No. 2 prepared four research articles covering various areas of pediatrics—co-authored with students from O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University—which were published in Scopus-indexed journals and Category B journals.

- A research article addressing issues in neonatology, titled “Late preterm infants: modern trends and challenges,” has been published in the *Ukrainian Scientific Medical Youth Journal* (2025; No. 3; pp. 137–143; https://doi.org/10.32345/USMYJ.3(157).2025.137-143).
This research paper was prepared by Alisa Shrivastava, a 6th-year student of the Faculty for Foreign Students, under the supervision of T.I. Shevtsova, Associate Professor at the Department of Pediatrics.
Thus, students associated with the Department of Pediatrics No. 2 are a worthy part of the young scientific community at Bogomolets National Medical University. We look forward to continued fruitful collaboration between faculty and students in the preparation of research articles and wish them further success and new achievements in their professional scientific endeavors.
