Instruction at the Department of Surgery (including the course on abdominal surgery) takes place at the department’s clinical sites: the State Institution “National Research Center for Radiation Medicine, Oncology and Hematology of the NAMS of Ukraine”; Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 12; Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 4; the State Institution “M.M. Amosov National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery of the NAMS of Ukraine”; the State Scientific Institution “Center for Innovative Medical Technologies of the NAS of Ukraine”; the National Military Medical Clinical Center “Main Military Clinical Hospital”; and the Kyiv City Clinical Emergency Hospital.
The department provides training for both undergraduate students and postgraduate students.
In accordance with the requirements of the Bologna Process, instruction is conducted using the credit-module system (Order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine No. 148 dated January 31, 2003, “On Measures to Implement the Provisions of the Bologna Declaration in the System of Higher Medical and Pharmaceutical Education”).
The educational process at the department involves students in years 4 through 6 from the Educational and Scientific Institute of Medicine, the Center for Work with Foreign Students, the Faculty for Training Physicians for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Faculty of Pediatrics, and the Educational and Scientific Institute of Mental Health. Teaching is conducted in accordance with the standard curriculum developed by the department’s staff and in compliance with the following regulatory documents:
the Law of Ukraine “On Higher Education”; Order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine No. 1197 dated November 8, 2021, “On Approval of the Higher Education Standard for Specialty 222 Medicine for the Second (Master’s) Level of Higher Education”; Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers No. 266 dated April 29, 2015, “On Approval of the List of Fields of Knowledge and Specialties for the Training of Higher Education Students”; Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 334 dated March 28, 2018, “On Approval of the Procedure for Conducting the Unified State Qualification Exam for Master’s Degree Students in Specialties within the Field of Knowledge ’22 Healthcare'”; Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No. 1187 dated December 30, 2015, “On Approval of Licensing Conditions for the Conduct of Educational Activities by Educational Institutions”; and other applicable regulatory documents.

A collection of methodological guidelines has been created for 4th- to 6th-year students to assist with preparation for each lesson topic in accordance with the curriculum (uploaded to the NMU repository).
In addition to study materials, department staff have developed a test bank used for interim and final modular assessments of 4th- to 6th-year students.
Particular attention is paid to preparing students for the ” Step-2″ licensing exam at the Department of Surgery (with a course in abdominal surgery). To this end, designated staff members regularly update the department’s ” Step-2: Surgery” test bank with new questions appearing in the general ” Step-2″ database managed by the Ministry of Health’s Center for Quality of Education (the department’s certified representative at the Center is Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor O.M. Petrenko).
Practical classes with students are conducted according to the curriculum not only theoretically, but also, mainly, at the patient’s bedside, in manipulation, dressing, operating, diagnostic departments (practical part).
