We invite you to attend a lecture on the ethics of war featuring Professor Jacob Stegenga
On May 26, an open lecture entitled “Ethics of War: A Radical Thesis About Proportionality” will be held at Bogomolets National Medical University.
The lecturer is Professor Jacob Stegenga, Acting Chair of the School of Humanities at Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and Senior Research Associate at the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom). He is the author of the acclaimed books “Medical Nihilism” (Oxford University Press, 2018), “Care and Cure: An Introduction to Philosophy of Medicine” (University of Chicago Press, 2018), and “Heart of Science” (University of Chicago Press, 2026).
Students, interns, postgraduate students, and university faculty are invited to participate.
The lecture will explore the concept of proportionality as one of the central principles of just war theory. Professor Stegenga argues that whether proportionality is satisfied depends on the temporal framework used to assess the expected benefits and harms arising from a war or an act of war.
Moderator: Prof. Iryna Vasylieva, Head of the Department of Philosophy, Bioethics and History of Medicine.
