Scientific work is one of the priority areas of activities of the Department of the Latin Languahe since its foundation.

Important areas of the scientific work of the Department are, currently, the implementation of the research initiatives: “Greek lexical substrate in the European term system (on the material of medical and parametric nomenclature)” (2012-2014); “Communicative and pragmatic potential of special medical and pharmaceutical terms” (2015-2017); “Methods of teaching professional Latin terminology for future medical professionals: lexico-semantic, structural and cultural aspects” (2018-2020).

The Department of the Latin Language annually participates in the International Scientific and Practical Conference of Students and Young Scientists “Topical Issues of Modern Medicine” and holds the section on linguistic and cultural aspects of medical terminology in Ukraine.

During the last 9 years the research results of the faculty members of the Department were presented in:

– 157 scientific articles

– 168 scientific reports

– 42 scientific abstracts

– 11 study guides

– 1 monograph

In addition, the Department faculty members have developed a range of training manuals. In accordance with the training programmes, “The Latin Language and Medical Terminology (Tutorial)” (2016) and “Tutorial in the Latin Language and Medical Terminology” (2013; for foreign students) were developed. The training tutorials are divided into tree thematic sections according to the principles of term-formation in the anatomical and histological, pharmaceutical and clinical medical subsystems. In the mentioned editions, the multiannual experience and cutting-edge teaching techniques being implemented by the Department of the Latin Language were taken into account.

Aiming at developing practical skills of professional competency at the under-graduate level the following workbooks for students were developed: «Робочий зошит до практикума «Латинська мова та медична термінологія» (2019), «Робочий зошит з латинської мови (для студентів фармацевтичного факультету)» (2019 ), «Medical Latin terminology workbook: study guide» (2019), «Рабочая тетрадь к практикуму по латинскому языку и медицинской терминологии» (2018). In these workbooks the exercises for learning and mastering normative Latin grammar and terminological material are represented. In accordace with the new training programmes, the workbooks are divided into thematic sections. The English version of the Workbook is supplemented with graphic exercises for knowledge of anatomical vocabulary.

Aiming at systematizing the lexical material and motivating students for individual learning the terminological base for forming lexical and grammatical competence the following study materials were developed: «Лексичний додаток з дисципліни «Латинська мова та медична термінологія» (2019), «Лексичний мінімум з латинської мови для студентів фармацевтичного факультету» (2019) and «Lexicon terminologiae medicinalis (Русский / English (2019; for foreign students). The lexical material covers all sections of the course and aims to identify knowledge of the theoretical foundations of Latin medical terminology. A certain amount of words intended for students to learn is presented in the context proverbs, stable professional medical expressions and clinical diagnoses that are necessary to develop the professional competence of a future specialist. The lexical material is given in the alphabetic order that essentially simplify the students’ independent work.

 

The manual “The Latin Language” (2019) has complex structure: it contains grammar material given in tables, information on Latin and Romance derivation, lexical minimum with the selected by the author words from the thematic vocabulary of basic Latin lexis. The vocabulary is supplied with the etymological commentary. The manual contains the illustrative and language material taken from the original sources.

The monograph “Latin Entomological Nomenclature: structural and semantic aspect” (2013) is dedicated to the complex analysis of the structural and semantic peculiarities of international Latin names of insects (entomonyms).The concept of nomenclature in modern scientific space is considered; the ways of replenishing the lexical fund of the Latin-language entomological nomenclature are described; typological classification of entomological nomens is developed; the role of vocabulary of classical languages (Latin and Ancient Greek) in the formation and development of Latin-language entomological nomenclature is established.

The results of research can be integrated into the academic process of teaching Latin to future physicians, which will promote the availability of training, improve its quality and effectiveness, as well as optimize the conduct of practical classes, increase the students’ motivation to learn Latin as a language of medicine, ensure the development of logical and critical thinking of the student, will contribute to the formation of communication skills and collaboration in the team as an important component of the professional skill of the future doctor.
