Department of Histology and Embryology

History of the Department

Creation of the Department of Histology and Embryology of Kyiv University is closely connected with activity of the Head of the Department of Anatomy, Volodymyr Oleksiyovych Bets. In the course of studying the structure of the adrenal bodies, bone development, brain cytoarchitectonics he used the microscopic methods of research and as no one else understood the significance of histological studies for future doctors. V. O. Bets read brilliantly a special course of lectures and conducted practical classes of Histology. He believed justly that the Histology unites the Anatomy with the Physiology and called Histology as ”Advanced Anatomy”.

As the number of students studying at the Medical Faculty is increasing, the staff of the Department had been expanded. At first the office of the Assistant Prosector was approved, then Prosector’s, and afterwards the offices of two anatomists and two laboratory orderlies. P. I. Peremezhko’s students appeared, among whom the distinguishing personalities were his future successors on the Department, Ya.N. Yakymovych, and F.I. Lomynskyi. According to P. I. Peremezhko’s contemporaries he lived an ascetic life, giving all his powers and time to serving his favourite science and the deal of medical training. On 27 December 1893, he died of an extended illness.
