THE COURSE “BARIATRIC SURGERY” LASTS AT O.O. BOHOMOLETS NMU
According to the data from World Health Organization (WHO) from 20 to 50% of population in developed countries all over the world have the excessive body weight. This problem in Ukraine covers 30-35% of patients with different degree of adiposity. Oleksander Ioffe, head at department of general surgery No 2, member in International organization of bariatric surgeons (IFSO) informed about it.
Within the course “Bariatric surgery”, organized by O.O. Bohomolets National medical university, on the base of department of general surgery No 2 doctors-surgeons are taught with methods for treatment of excessive weight through laparoscopic operation on stomach reduction. The training course consists of topical lectures, practice in simulator and presence at operating room during demonstration operations.
Four qualified specialists-surgeons from Kyiv, Odessa and Drogobych have the possibility to perform the simulation laparoscopic operations on stomach reduction on the most modern simulator of the new generation, which maximally approaches a doctor to the main stages of operation and issues the statistical mistakes, which he/she makes during training. The simulator demonstrates how correctly to make the operation and the doctor during learning module shall drill the skills to automatism.
“The golden standard of bariatric surgery is the intestinal shunt procedure – operation that does not cause to invalidity of patient and provide with 100% guaranty for weight loss. The important fact is that the blood sugar level is normalized at patients, who suffer from diabetes mellitus of the 2nd type, after such operation and there is the long remission. The advantages of laparoscopic interferences are that they facilitate the period after operation and the patient already in 2 hours can walk and in 5 days it is discharged”, – tells Oleksander Ioffe.
In Ukraine the operations on stomach reduction are held since 2012. At present moment it is only approximately 150-200 laparoscopic interferences. Last year 360 thousands of operations on adiposity were made all over the world, and among them 52% – laparoscopic intestinal shunt procedure.
That’s why the performance of such courses for advanced training and topical improvement will allow widely implementing the laparoscopic operations on stomach reduction into practice and reducing the number of lethal cases, caused by severe forms of adiposity.
It is also planned to perform 4 cycles of training in topical improvement on the base of department of general surgery No 2 at O.O. Bohomolets National medical university. The first one is the bariatric surgery, the second one – herniology (laparoscopic operations on hernia), and already next year – the performance of training cycle “one-port surgery” (interference through one centesis) and cycle “laparoscopic surgery of gullet and stomach”.
