RESULTS FROM TWO STATES OF APTIS TESTING AMONG TEACHERS OF NMU

Two stages in implementation of project “Improvement of English among teachers of NMU” finished at O.O. Bohomolets National medical university.

80 teachers, who teach in the first and second course in English, due to request from heads at departments, passed through Aptis testing from British Council that checks the level of English from A1 to C scale in General European recommendations for linguistic education and allows assessing the possession of all four linguistic competencies; speaking, listening, reading and writing.

A candidate, who passes through Aptis testing, receives the mark due to the scale from 0 to 50 for sections in grammar and vocabulary, as well as the mark due to the scale from 0 to 50 and level due to general European recommendations from A1 to C for each competency, being checked. In general it creates the integral picture about degree in possession of language.

Due to results from testing 17 (22%) teachers received level C, 29 (37%) – B2, 25 (32%) – B1, 5 (6%) – A2, 2 (3%) – A1.

The highest results were detected in listening, where 38% of teachers showed level C and 27% – B2, as well as reading, where 41% received level C and 20% – level B2.

The lowest results were in speaking, where most teachers showed level B1.

All teachers (80), who took part in testing, received the individual certificates. Let’s mention that according to the Order from Ministry of education and science of Ukraine No 13, dd. 14.01.2016 “About approval of Procedure for awarding the scientific degrees to scientific and scientific pedagogical workers” Aptis test is referred to the list of recommended international tests for knowledge of English as a foreign language.

According to the results from testing the next stage will be the formation of groups of teachers, who will be able to pass through the study on improvement of English at courses, held by British Council.
