WORKSHOP OF MAXILLOFACIAL SURGEONS FROM BRAZIL IN THE FRAME OF THE PROJECT “SMILE UKRAINE”
On February 2, 2017 in the Dental Medical Center of the Bogomolets National Medical University (NMU), the specialists of oral and maxillofacial surgery from Brazil performed a workshop for the faculty, medical interns and senior students of the University.
The visit of the orthodontist and surgeon – Saulo Borges and Sergio Lima – was organised in the framework of the project “Smile Ukraine “. This is a joint project initiated by the NMU, the University of São Paulo (Brazil) and the University Itauna (Brazil) with the support of the charitable organization “Rotary”.
According to the Director of the Dental Medical Center of the NMU, Professor Andrii Kopchak, such cooperation is a unique exchange of experiences for guests from Brazil, representatives from a leading Center of rehabilitation for patients with cranio-facial anomalies # “Centrihno” in Bauru (Brazil), which aims at the treatment of children with congenital defects from birth to adulthood and their full recovery.
During the workshop, Saulo Borges and Sergio Lima covered most interesting topics on orthognathic surgery – surgery on facial bones, which is aimed at correcting the bite, changing the shape of the jaw and bringing them to optimal anatomical norms. The abovementioned complicated surgeries have been also successfully carried out in the Dental Medical Center of NMU. The NMU surgeons exchanged experience with foreign colleagues to improve their qualifications and results.
According to the coordinator of the project “Smile Ukraine” at the University, the head of Department of Surgical Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery of Pediatric Age, Professor Liudmyla Yakovenko, in the framework of cooperation, the education and training of students, doctors, dentists and orthodontists, and their internships in the hospitals of Brazil, the exchange of experience, participation in conferences, clinical and scientific work are fully supported and covered.
After the workshop a meeting of the Rector of the University, Professor Kateryna Amosova with Brazilian colleagues was held. Participants discussed expanding of the borders of cooperation in the framework of agreements between universities.
It is worth mentioning that it is the second visit of Brazilian experts to Ukraine. The project “Smile Ukraine” expands due to the involvement of new departments and specialists from the NMU.
