IX INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR OF STUDENTS AND YOUNG SCIENTISTS, DEVOTED TO WORLD CANCER DAY, 1-2, FEBRUARY, 2018

The IX International Seminar of Students and Young Scientists, devoted to World Cancer Day, took place on 1-2, February, 2018. This year the seminar confirmed its status for the largest youth oncological forum of Ukraine. The seminar was visited by 220 participants from all Ukraine and Belarus, including 32 foreign participants. The organizers of the seminar were the department of oncology of O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University and Society of Young Scientists of NMU, National Cancer Institute and Council of Young Scientist at NCI, PO “INgenius”.

The first day of the event was practice-oriented. 60 participants visited National Cancer Institute. Among them 45 participants in the conference visited 17 operating halls at National Cancer Institute and could see the unique operations by the best oncosurgeons in Ukraine. In particular, the assistant at department of oncology, Candidate of Medicine Ihor Motuziuk within the master class performed two operations: 1) subcutaneous mastectomy with single-step endoprosthesis replacement; 2) Removal of implant, Capsulectomy, re-endoprosthesis replacement with installation of sieve graft. 6 participants visited the master class in intra-operating pathohistological examinations under supervision of doctor- pathoanatomist Dmytro Novikov. 9 participants during master class “Anesthetic provision in oncosurgery”, which tutor was doctor-intern Arsen Vitiuk, got acquainted with the work of anesthesiology and intensive care department at NCI: preparation of patient for operation, introduction to general anesthesia, monitoring for condition of patient during operation, anesthesia recovery, delivery of patient to intensive care department, among practical skills, the participants got acquainted with the technique of direct laryngoscopy, intubation of trachea, extubation of trachea, installation of central venous catheter. Other 40 participants visited the excursion to Spizhenko Clinic and got acquainted with the work and provision at one of the best private oncologic clinics in Ukraine. 35 participants registered to master class in emergencies in oncology, which was held on the base of Simulation Study Center of NMU under supervision of assistant Ihor Sirenko. The second day of the event consisted of educational and scientific parts. Within the first part the participants listened to the introductory lecture by director of National Cancer Institute, Doctor of Medicine, Olena Kolesnik about actuality of problem about high sickness and mortality rate against cancer diseases and main ways of their prevention. The next introductory speech was made by head at department of oncology Doctor of Medicine Roman Vereshchako, who read the lecture “Impact of results from diagnostics on choice of treatment policy for lung cancer”.

Besides, within the seminar the following lectures were read: by Anatolii Shudrak, deputy chief doctor in surgical issues at National Cancer Institute, professor at department of oncology at O.O. Bogomolets NMU on combined duties on topic “Modern approaches to treatment of rectal cancer”, Ihor Motuziuk, assistant at department of oncology at NMU on topic “Modern surgical treatment of breast cancer”, Mariia Kukushkina, Candidate of Medicine, senior research officer at department skin and soft tissues tumors at National Cancer Institute “Principles of diagnostics and treatment of skin melanoma”, Yurii Kondratskyi, head at department of gullet and stomach tumors at National Cancer Institute “Modern principles for treatment of stomach cancer”, Oleksander Stakhovskyi, senior research officer at department of plastic and reconstructive oncourology at National Cancer Institute “Prostate cancer – from diagnostics to treatment. Simply about complex things”, L.V. Matiievska “High-precision radiation therapy IMRT and radiosurgery of cancer diseases”, M.H. Matviienko “Clinical significance of hematological indices in oncology”.

After academic lectures they started the second scientific part of the seminar. 35 participants in the seminar prepared the oral reports and presented the results from their researches. The senior laboratory assistant at department of oncology Yevhenii Kostiuchenko made the report on topic “Genetic breast cancer: world tendencies” within the scientific work at department of oncology. Due to results from work of the seminar, 9 participants received the prize places and obtained the costly presents.
