TO WORLD GLAUCOMA WEEK 2015

Glaucoma is mostly a social problem. Among diseases that cause to blindness glaucoma is the most insidious. The blindness comes unnoticeably, gradually, painlessly (in most cases). Namely this explains the fact that the patients consult a doctor when it is very late and it becomes impossible to return or to preserve the eyesight.

The term “glaucoma” in modern ophthalmology unites the group of diseases that have different origin but the common symptoms: higher intraocular pressure (IOP), tunneling of vision, and development of optic nerve atrophy. We need to struggle against it only uniting the efforts of the whole community – patients, specialists, state, international organizations. Taking into consideration the medical, social economical significance of glaucoma, No Blindness Day was announced in 2008 for the first time in order to support the initiative by World Glaucoma Association (WGA) and World Glaucoma Patients Association (WGPA) and World Glaucoma Week was implemented since 2011, the events within which limits are held in most countries all over the world.

Ukraine supported this initiative. This year a number of events: lectures for patients, glaucoma screening, and speeches by specialists-ophthalmologists in mass media were held since 9 until 15, March in all regions according to the letter from MHC of Ukraine.

In particular, the following events were held in Kyiv:

The lectures for patients about glaucoma were read:

  • On 10 and 11, March, 2015 in assembly hall of administrative building of Eye Microsurgery Center at the address: Komarova avenue, 3. The thematic lecture “GLAUCOMA” for family doctors – chief ophthalmologist of HCD in c. Kyiv, assistant professor at department of ophthalmology at O.O. Bohomolets NMU Olena Ivanivna Kurylina.
  • On 11, March, 2015 in lecture hall, building 6 in Oleksandrivska hospital – lecturer, chief ophthalmologist of HCD in c. Kyiv, assistant professor at department of ophthalmology at O.O. Bohomolets NMU Olena Ivanivna Kurylina, in lecture hall of medical college in MCH No 1 – lecturer Nataliia Mykolayivna Veselovska.
  • On 12, March, 2015 in polyclinic No 1 in Dniprovskyy district in Petra Zaporozhtsya Street, 26 – lecturer Natalya Yevgenivna Zhelnaruk; in polyclinic No 2 in Golosiyivskyy district in Yakubovskyy Street, 6 – lecturer Larysa Arkadiyivna Bespalko.

The action “Open your eyes at glaucoma” was held at SC Ashan Petrivka and SC Ashan Bilychi, was held on 14, March, 2015 in order to support Glaucoma Week at the initiative from MHC of Ukraine, O.O. Bohomolets NMU; it included the informing the population about glaucoma, its diagnostics and treatment, measurement of ocular pressure to all desired people, performance of Armsler test, mini consultations.

Due to results from action over 400 citizens, who received the informative brochures, were examined free of charge. The qualified recommendations were given to patients, at whom they found the higher ocular pressure, and they were sent for further examination and treatment.

The specialists from district polyclinics took part in action, thus there was the possibility to measure the ocular pressure at all desired people. The information about glaucoma and events, performed by specialists, were widely described in mass media and social networks. In particular, the press conference of leading specialists from MHC of Ukraine, HCD in c. Kyiv, department of ophthalmology at O.O. Bohomolets National medical university was held on Wednesday, 11, March, 2015 on the base of Oleksandrivska clinical hospital.
