OPEN PRACTICAL CLASS IN SURGERY FROM TEACHER AT KAROLINSKA INSTITUTE STEPHAN GAAS

The seminar and open practical class in surgery took place on 11, December, 2015 on the base of department of surgery No 4 of NMU (clinical base Republican clinical hospital at MHC of Ukraine).
This event was held at the initiative of the rector K.M. Amosova according to the plan for integration of Ukraine into European educational space and agreements between NMU and Karolinska Institute (Sweden) in order to acquaint the students and teachers with teaching methodology for discipline “Surgery” due to Bologna system.
The open practical class in surgery was held by Stephan Gaas Ph. D – teacher at department of medicine in Karolinska Institute on the base of department of surgery at Gastrocenter of Karolinska University Hospital and Andrii Dinets Ph. D. – assistant at department of surgery No 4 of NMU. The organizers of the event were the department of medicine at Karolinska Institute and divisions of NMU: department of surgery No 4, scientific research unit, department of international relations and O.A. Kysil Students’ scientific society. The students, resident medical practitioners, postgraduate students and teachers of NMU took part in the seminar, which was held in English. At the beginning of the seminar the introductory speech was made by pro-rector on scientific pedagogical work assistant professor O.V. Stechenko and head at department of surgery No 4 professor V.G. Mishalov. Ph. D. Stephan Gaas made the report about general approaches to teaching and own teaching of discipline “Surgery” at Karolinska Institute. It should be mentioned that Swedish colleagues apply the generally accepted teaching methods but while examining the students they widely use Objective structured clinical examination (OSCE), as well as have the medical simulation center to drill the practical skills of medical students.
The rector of NMU, professor K.M. Amosova, who also took part in the seminar, awarded the Charter of Honors from NMU to Stephan Gaas for performance of the seminar and development of cooperation between NMU and Karolinska Institute in the sphere of educational projects.
