COOPERATION OF NATIONAL MEDICAL UNIVERSITY WITH THE KAROLINSKA INSTITUTE IN SCIENTIFIC AND EDUCATIONAL SPHERES

Scientific and educational training of Karolinska Institute (Stockholm, Sweden) with epidemiology was held on 8-10th of October 2015 at Bogomolets National Medical University.

The training was organized within the framework of long-term research cooperation between Bogomolets National Medical University and the Karolinska Institute and it was held for students of postgraduate level – the interns, residents, graduate students and young scientists.

This training is a basic epidemiological training and aims to familiarize students with the basic concepts used in modern epidemiological studies and to prepare them for further participation in training: ‘Design of epidemiological studies’ and ‘Analysis and interpretation of data’.  Carrying out of these trainings is planned in 2016.

The main topics of the training was:

• History of epidemiology and modern achievements;

• Impact factors and the effects of disease. Indicators of disease incidence;

• Design of epidemiological studies. The concept of systematic errors.

The training program included attending lectures, students work in groups, obtaining copies of the lectures’ materials and situation tasks used during group discussions.

Olena Hruzieva, MD, PhD, postdoctoral fellow of the Institute of Environmental Medicine (Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden).

Training Teachers:

Göran Pershagen, MD, PhD, professor of the Institute of Environmental Medicine (Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden).

Anna Sydorchuk, MD, PhD, director of research projects the Department of Public Health (Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden).

Andriy Pyko, MD, PhD student of the Institute of Environmental Medicine (Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden).

The lecture course and practical training of Epidemiology aroused great interest among the audience as part of the basic course. Successfully compiled program that includes work in small groups, interactive dialogue and final discussion on the subjects contributed to good acquisition of knowledge and practical skills in epidemiological analysis.

Participants of training unanimously expressed their desire to continue training in epidemiology within further in-depth courses.

Students who attended all the lectures and workshops and performed training tasks received certificates on training completion.

The event included a meeting of NMU’s administration and scientists with colleagues from the Karolinska Institute, during which they discussed ways of further cooperation.
