CONFERENCE TO 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF PROFESSOR YU.Y. BERNADSKYY

The international scientific practical conference “Modern dentistry and facial surgery”, devoted to 100^th anniversary since birthday of professor Yu.Y. Bernadskyy, was held on 30, January, 2015 in lecture hall of dental building.

In addition to the students, administration of dental faculty, employees of departments and O.O. Bohomolets Dental medical center, University library, National medical library of Ukraine many other guests took part in the conference: head at department of surgical dentistry in M.I. Pyrogov Vinnytsia national medical university, professor S.M. Shuvalov and assistant professor at department S.S. Polischuk, head at department of surgical dentistry and facial surgery with plastic and reconstructive surgery of head and neck in Ukrainian medical dental academy (c. Poltava), professor D.S. Avetikov and assistant professor at department I.V. Yatsenko, writer, Candidate of Medicine, Yu. Vilenskyy.

The easy and natural atmosphere of communication was started by introductory speech from co-chairman in organizing committee, dean in dental faculty, professor V.P. Nespriadko, who told the present people about work contacts with Bernadskyy Yu.Y. as a first class facial surgeon, at the stages of clinical residency, postgraduate study, at the post of assistant at department of orthopedic dentistry.

After demonstration of illustrative fragments from documentary film of introductory lecture by professor Yu.Y. Bernadskyy to the students of the 3^rd course in dental faculty (September, 1999) the postgraduate student at department of surgical dentistry and facial surgery A.V. Pybachuk made the report about his life and work. She widely emphasized the main stages of childhood, youth and adult life, scientific achievements, professional establishment from student in Kazan state dental institute to the head at department of surgical dentistry in KMI and honorary president in Ukrainian association of facial surgeons.

The head at department of orthodontics and propedeutics of orthopedic dentistry, professor P.S. Flis shared his own memories with the present people. He told about teaching talent of Bernadskyy, specificity of his lectures that were compulsorily accompanied by visible demonstration of thematic patients, author’s textbook, which was a desk book if not for all but for the most specialists at that time.
”Not only teachers teach, all meetings, both good and bad, successful and unsuccessful, everything teaches…”, in such a way started his memories the head at department of pediatric surgical dentistry, corresponding member in NAMS of Ukraine, professor L.V. Kharkov, who mentioned that only now he in full understood what a talented and wise human Bernadskyy was. The secret of his success and achievements in first turn was the self-development. Bernadskyy Yu.Y. made much for development of international relations that in the future created the possibilities for integration of his colleagues and friends into international community of specialists. At the end Leonid Viktorovych said: “A lecturer and a teacher are quite different things. A lecturer gives the knowledge to you, and it depends on you whether you take it or not… A teacher with his/her example shows how it is necessary to work. Yuriy Yosypovych created his pupils as such ones, what he wanted to see them – and this is his peculiar feature”.
Professor L.M. Yakovenko described the brilliant episodes from life of Yu.Y. Bernadskyy, dwelt on what a titanic work he performed, preparing the reviews of special literature, on his skill quickly to assess the knowledge of young specialist, emotionally told about hours of cooperation with Yuriy Yosypovych, spent as an assistant at operations, described different sides of public life at department at that time.

Finishing the marathon of original memories and impressions, Yuriy Viilenskyy laconically generalized: “It is symbolic that the image of Yu.Y. Bernadskyy is brought by his pupils with enthusiasm”. Professor V.O. Malanchuk made the final speech and expressed the sincere gratitude for support and assistance in performance of the conference to Rector of University, professor K.M. Amosova, dean of faculty, professor V.P. Nespriadko, members in organizing committee, and all present people and announced about start of section for young scientists. They listened to eight reports by students and young scientists, who presented their scientific works and achievements on urgent topics of surgical dentistry and facial surgery to the audience.
The employees of University library prepared the excellent exhibition of printed works and publications by Yu.Y. Bernadskyy, commented on the presented exhibits, emphasized the love to books and bibliographical talent of the hero of anniversary. During the whole conference in the entry of lecture hall there was this exhibition, and all, who desired, could get acquainted with his scientific achievements as a result from industries work for many years and literary activity.

The epitaph on the grave of Yu.Y. Bernadskyy was his own words: “I lived all my life on the razor’s edge, having remained mainly in the title of Human”. We hope that in the future the memory about Yuriy Yosypovych Bernadskyy will serve to the future generations of doctors and young specialists as an example of devoted service to the labor of love, people, science, and his country.
