The scientific and pedagogical staff of the department constantly improve their level of professional skills through participation in scientific forums, completion of advanced training cycles, internships, and attending webinars .

The scientific activity of the Department of Physiology covers key areas of modern biomedical science, in particular, the study of the physiology of the cardiovascular ‑system and the mechanisms of vascular regulation, reproductive physiology with the study of the influence of nanomaterials and toxic factors, the physiology of stress, adaptation and oxidative metabolism. Considerable attention is paid to ecological and toxicological physiology, entomedicine and natural bioactive compounds, as well as issues of immunophysiology . Research is being developed in neurophysiology and regulation of body functions, psychophysiology and medical pedagogy, as well as the history of physiology and Ukrainian physiological schools.

The scientific and pedagogical staff of the department are active members of the “Ukrainian Physiological Society named after P.G. Kostyuk, members of the Federation of European Physiological Societies ( FEPS ) and the International Union of Physiological Sciences ( IUPS )”

History of the Department

The creation of the Department of Physiology of a Healthy Person is associated with the opening of the Faculty of Medicine at St. Volodymyr’s University of Kyiv in 1841. Physiology education began in 1842, as 2nd year students came to the department. The first head of the department was full professor E.E. Miram. Since the organization of the department, its main direction has been to ensure the teaching of physiology at a high level. E.E. Miram was the first to introduce laboratory research by students in classes.

From 1962 to 1965, O.P. Walter headed the Department of Physiology of a Healthy Person on a part-time basis until the head of the department was elected through a competition. The department conducted research on animal heat.

In 1865, the department was headed by V.B. Tomsa (1831-1895), a student of K. Ludwig. It was with the arrival of V.B. Tomsa to the department that the formation of physiology as a science in Kyiv was associated. He organized a physiological laboratory, where experimental physiological research began. V.B. Tomsa created a physiological school. Among his students were P.F. Sukhanov, O.L. Rav, M.O. Rogovich. In addition, the scientist created the first textbook on physiology for students.

In 1884, the position of head of the Department of Physiology of a Healthy Person was taken by S.I. Chiryev. He significantly enriched the physiological laboratory, replenishing it with electrophysiological equipment, in particular, mirror galvanometers, telephones for studying the action potentials of nerves and muscles, a capillary electrometer, etc. S.I. Chiryev also made a great contribution to the formation of the Kiev school of physiologists. He educated a worthy scientific generation, some of whom became famous scientists. These are V.P. Kurchinsky , Y.P. Laudenbach, O.V. Leontovych, E. Maidel , etc.

The glorious traditions of the department were continued by V.Yu. Chagovets (1873-1941), who headed the department in 1910. Under the leadership of V.Yu. Chagovets , electrophysiological research, the study of the physiology of blood circulation, digestion, etc. were conducted at the department . He created a large physiological school. The studies of A.I. Venchykov , E.S. Stalnenko , E.A. Stolyarska, L.L. Gizhdeu , etc. are of significant importance for theoretical medicine .

Since 1921, when higher education was being reformed in Ukraine, the department continued to exist as part of the Kyiv Medical Institute, V.Yu. Chagovets continued to head the department of normal physiology.

A rather fruitful contribution to the development of scientific achievements of the department was made by the famous physiologist D.S. Vorontsov, who headed the department in 1935-1941. Vorontsov’s works are widely known, dedicated to the study of processes occurring in neuromuscular synapses. For his electrophysiological studies, D.S. Vorontsov constructed and used a cathode ray oscilloscope.

Danilo Semenovich Vorontsov works with an oscilloscope he created himself.

Due to World War II, the department was evacuated to Chelyabinsk, where the department was headed by D.S. Vorontsova’s student S.I. Fudel -Osipova.

In the spring of 1946, the oldest student of I.P. Pavlov, Professor G.V. Folbort (1885-1960), was elected to head the department. The main scientific direction of the department headed by G.V. Folbort was the study of the processes of fatigue and recovery in various organs and tissues.

In 1960, Professor M.I. Putilin (1910-1982) was elected head of the department. Over the years, M.I. Putilin, together with his colleagues and students (D.G. Nalyvaiko, O.O. Muratov, V.A. Pirogov, S.M. Belan , V.I. Korkach , V.K. Punynskaya , M.T. Pindych , L.I. Lutsenko, Z.I. Bushmakina , A.E. Kulakov, etc.) studied changes in the temperature of working organs and tissues in connection with changes in their functional state.

M.I. At this time the department’s staff directed their research to the study of the physiology of digestion.

From 1987 to 2013, the department was headed by a student of academician V.V. Frolkis – corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, professor V.G. Shevchuk , whose scientific interests are related to cellular and molecular mechanisms of regulation of the activity of the heart and blood vessels. During these years, under the leadership of the methodologist of the department S. Bilan , the educational and methodological base of the department was significantly enriched, a number of textbooks and a textbook on physiology were published.

Department staff 2010

From 2013 to 2025, the department was headed by Associate Professor I.M.
