Barykin. In 1933, Professor M.P. Neshchadymenko was elected Head of the Department of Epidemiology; he simultaneously headed the Department of Microbiology.

In 1939, the Department of Epidemiology came under the leadership of the renowned epidemiologist Professor S.N.Ruchkovsky, who was elected a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR. Under S.N. Ruchkovsky’s guidance, the department’s educational process began to focus on epidemiological topics, while scientific research was dedicated to the epidemiology of specific infectious diseases.

In 1948, the distinguished epidemiologist and Full Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, Professor L.V. Hromashevsky, was elected Head of the Department of Epidemiology. He introduced fundamental changes to both the teaching of epidemiology and the department’s research activities.

Epidemiology began to be taught across all faculties, and new lectures and practical classes were incorporated into the curricula for general epidemiology. L.V.Hromashevsky authored two classic textbooks: *General Epidemiology* (1949, 1965) and *Special Epidemiology* (1947). Under the leadership of L.V.Hromashevsky, the department’s staff initiated comprehensive theoretical and experimental research on the “mechanisms of transmission of infectious disease pathogens,” which made it possible to identify the impact of the transmission mechanism on the epidemic process across various infections.

L.V.Hromashevsky is a founding figure of domestic epidemiology; he elucidated the patterns of the epidemic process, formulated the laws of epidemiology, developed the theory of pathogen transmission mechanisms and a classification of infectious diseases, established a scientific school of epidemiology, mentored dozens of Doctors and Candidates of Sciences, and authored over 250 scientific works.

In 1962, Professor Ihor Mykolaiovych Morhunov was elected Head of the Department of Epidemiology. I.M.Morhunov extensively integrated immunological methods into both the educational process and scientific research, conducting comprehensive studies on the epidemiology and immunology of various infectious diseases. Building upon and creatively advancing L.V.Hromashevsky’s scientific concepts and ideas, the department’s staff investigated the epidemiology of infections caused by opportunistic pathogens (such as staphylococcal infections, tetanus, and botulism) and the specific epidemiological and preventive aspects of healthcare-associated infections and immune response mechanisms in cases of staphylococcal infections, rabies, and tetanus; they also developed measures to improve immunoprophylaxis for the pediatric population. I.M.Morhunov supervised the training of 10 Doctors of Science and 28 Candidates of Science and authored over 200 scientific publications.

In 1987, Professor Y.D.Hots assumed leadership of the department, continuing its established traditions in both the educational process and scientific research. The department’s staff continued to study the epidemiology and prevention of healthcare-associated infections; they identified risk groups and factors associated with these infections in various types of surgical wards and developed an experimental model of *Bacteroides* infection.

A medical-epidemiological technology (the “kariogram” method) was developed for diagnosing and correcting sub-clinical health conditions; its application reduces the incidence of purulent-septic diseases and, when used alongside immunoprophylaxis, significantly lowers the rate of severe post-vaccination reactions in children while boosting their immunity levels.

Since 1994, the department has conducted research on “Ways to improve the effectiveness of immunoprophylaxis against vaccine-preventable respiratory tract infections.” Based on a study of the causes and characteristics of the diphtheria epidemic in Kyiv, the system for epidemiological surveillance of diphtheria was refined for conditions involving mass vaccination, specifically accounting for the dominant risk group: patients with acute nonspecific ENT pathologies. The department serves as a resource center for educational and methodological activities within Ukraine’s higher medical educational institutions; it provides professional development for epidemiology instructors from medical universities and colleges, as well as training for medical interns.

Since September 2005, the department has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor I.P. Kolesnikova. Her research focuses on studying the impact of various factors on the strength of post-vaccination immunity against measles, diphtheria, and tetanus, as well as on optimizing epidemiological surveillance and refining vaccination strategies for vaccine-preventable diseases (such as measles, diphtheria, pertussis, mumps, rubella, and others).

I.P. Kolesnikova participated in the development of several computer programs that have been implemented in practice: “Epidinf” (for registering and tracking primary records, managing databases, and performing tasks related to epidemiological analysis and surveillance of infectious diseases); “Fluvac-D” (for the automated tracking and processing of data from fluorographic screenings and adult immunization); “Stat” (for the automated processing of outpatient records); and “UkrVak” (for managing record-keeping and reporting documentation, planning preventive vaccinations, and conducting rapid analysis and monitoring of key immunization indicators).

Since the department’s inception, two faculty members have earned Doctor of Science degrees and twenty-four have earned Candidate of Science degrees; staff members have published three monographs, three collections of research papers, over thirty sets of methodological guidelines and information leaflets, and fourteen educational-methodological manuals for students, while also securing seventeen invention certificates and eight international patents.

Faculty members have co-authored several epidemiology textbooks, including *Epidemiology* (edited by V.D. Belyakov and R.Kh. Yafayev; Moscow, 1989), featuring Prof. M.M. Kolesnikov; and *Epidemiology* (edited by K.M. Syniak and V.M. Hyrin; Kyiv, 1998) and *Epidemiology with Fundamentals of Medical Parasitology* (edited by K.M. Syniak and V.M. Hyrin; Kyiv, 2001), featuring Prof. Yu.D. Hots.

In 2005, the manual *Epidemiology*, edited by Yu.D. Hots, I.P. Kolesnikova, and H.A. Mokhort, was published.

In 2012, a national textbook on epidemiology, edited by Professor I.P. Kolesnikova and co-authored by department staff, was published.

Since 2024, the department has been headed by Associate Professor T. V. Petrusevych, Candidate of Medical Sciences (specializing in Epidemiology). Her research focuses on the epidemiology of infectious diseases, vaccine prevention, epidemiological research methods, modeling and forecasting epidemic situations, key factors contributing to disease spread within the population, and risk assessment for various population groups, taking into account their socio-demographic characteristics.

At the department, higher education student study the patterns of the epidemic process, the fundamentals of immunoprophylaxis, epidemiological research methods, and the principles of infection control. They analyze population morbidity and mortality rates across territorial, temporal, and socio-demographic dimensions; identify risk factors; and formulate and test epidemiological hypotheses using analytical methods. The acquisition of practical skills involves conducting outbreak investigations, identifying sources, mechanisms, and routes of infection transmission, as well as planning and evaluating the effectiveness of preventive and anti-epidemic measures aimed at preventing the spread, containing, and eliminating foci of infectious diseases.

An independent Department of Epidemiology at the Kyiv Medical Institute was established in 1932 under the leadership of Professor V.O.
