The Department of General Surgery No. 1 of Bogomolets National Medical University is based in Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 10. Along with theoretical knowledge, the Department provides students, interns, and resident doctors with practical experience in surgery, as this hospital provides emergency care to patients with acute surgical pathology twenty-four seven, throughout the year, as well as elective care for patients with abdominal pathologies, diseases of the organs of hepato-pancreato-biliary area, to various categories of oncological patients requiring simultaneous surgeries with single-stage interventions on several organs (pancreas, liver, stomach, biliary ducts, large intestine, kidneys, ureters, vessels etc.).

 

The Department’s teaching staff is actively engaged in the consultation and treatment work in Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 10 and other Kyiv treatment institutions. Annually, consultations and medical assistance are provided to the staff and students of the O.O. Bohomolets National Medical University.

The main areas of the Department’s work are:

  • Pancreatic surgery
  • Hepatic surgery
  • Biliary tract surgery
  • Surgical complications of oncological diseases
  • Laparoscopic surgical interventions
  • Endoscopic surgical interventions

 

Annually, the hospital treats over 6,000 patients, which enables students to be immediately involved in the examination and treatment of patients and maintain the high practical level of the teaching and learning process. The Chairman and the staff of the Department make daily rounds in the Intensive Care and Surgery Departments of Kyiv City Clinical Hospital No. 10, provide consultations to patients in its other departments, other Kyiv hospitals and other cities of Ukraine.

The Department has gathered considerable experience in treating patients with acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, benign and malignant tumors of the liver, biliary ducts, abdominal cavity and retroperitoneal space tumors. Also, the Department staff perform plastic operations to correct cosmetic defects of the torso and face (abdominoplasty, blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty etc.). Annually, the Hospital performs over 4,000 complex elective and urgent operative interventions due to surgical pathologies.

The Department is equipped with state-of-the-art surgical equipment allowing to perform diagnostic and treatment procedures, surgical interventions in compliance with the European standards of care (Cryopuls cryotherapy apparatus, FUJINON duodenoscope with a video imaging system, BIOMEDICA ultrasonic device, OLYMPUS laparoscopic stack, Ligasure apparatus, Stryker endoscopic equipment, Martin and Erbe electrocautery, etc.), which allows to demonstrate the modern methods of patients’ operative examination and treatment to students.

The modern treatment and diagnostic equipment used in the teaching and learning activities allows to perform a wide range of laparoscopic surgeries, endoscopic and minimally invasive interventions in all segments of the gastrointestinal tract.

In 1982, Professor V. Zemskov and the Department staff initiated the establishment of Kyiv City Center for Surgery of the Liver, Bile Ducts and Pancreas, which has been an integral part of the Department for over thirty years and bears Professor V Zemskov’s name. Over 1,200 surgical interventions of III-V degree of complexity are performed annually with the participation of the Department staff.

The Department staff was the first to propose and implement into practice a large number of novel scientific developments in hepatopancreatobiliary surgery, which since have been widely adopted. The Department staff’s membership in international organizations allows applying the latest diagnostic and treatment technologies quickly thanks to scientific exchange with specialists from Austria, Germany, USA, Japan, Russia etc.

Our specialists participate in world and European congresses, which enables them to continually update the diagnostic and treatment tactics consistent with the world best practices and adopted current recommendations, to exchange scientific periodicals and publications, to take part in the immediate exchange of the obtained results with specialized centers all over the world. As a result, the indicators of the Department’s and Center’s surgical activities meet the European standards.

The state flag of Ukraine was twice (in 1996 and 1997) raised in the hall of the European Parliament in Brussels, Belgium, during the ceremony of awarding the Order of Merit to the Department’s members of staff.

Over the recent five years, the Department’s representatives presented their reports at congresses in Germany, USA, Israel, Russia and Belarus.

Since 2003, the Department pays a lot of attention to comprehensive treatment of the lesser pelvis and retroperitoneal space tumors. The Department staff includes 7 oncology surgeons.

The Department’s team, with its traditions, internationally acclaimed scholars, surgeons and brilliant educators, continues its active and fruitful activities on improving and optimizing teaching and learning activities to train young doctors, develop up-to-date surgical technologies and implement the achievements of the modern medical science into the practice of public health protection in Ukraine.
