History of the Department

Department of Surgical Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery of Childhood of Bogomolets National Medical University comes from the Department of Surgical Dentistry. The need to separate the pediatric clinic of maxillofacial surgery and to introduce a separate discipline was formed gradually from 1962, when cots were placed at the clinical base of the Department of Surgical Dentistry of the Kyiv Medical Institute. The problems of children with congenital and acquired diseases of the maxillofacial area have since been dealt with by the staff of the Department of Surgical Dentistry – prof. Yu.J. Bernansky, prof. D.V. Dudko, prof. L.V. Kharkiv, Assoc. R.N. Chekhov, as. G.O. Rolled, as. LK Banna, as. E.M. Loganovska, ace. VV. Krasnolensky, as. VI. Kozlyuk, as. I.O. Raksha.

In early 1980, thanks to the work done by prof. Yu.J. Bernadsky, Assoc. R.N. Chekhov, Assoc. D.V. Dudko and Assoc. L.V. Kharkiv, the first republican significance of the children’s department of the Department of Surgical Dentistry of KMI was created on the basis of the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of the Kyiv City Children’s Clinical Hospital № 2 (on st. Alisher Navoi, 3). In 1983, at the request of professors DV. Dudka and L.V. Kharkiv Children’s Clinic was transferred to Kyiv City Children’s Clinical Hospital № 14. In 1986, the Republican Center for the Treatment of Children with Congenital and Acquired Pathology of the Maxillofacial Site was opened at the clinic. In 1989, the children’s clinic, together with the Republican Center, was transferred to the Children’s Clinical Hospital № 7 m. Kyiv.

In 1994, the department became a separate structural and functional unit of the National Medical University. O.O. Bogomoltsia according to the order of the NMU name OO. Bogomoltsia for № 1184-L from 14.12.1994. The department was headed by prof. L.V. Kharkiv. The main base of the unit was the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of the Children’s Clinical Hospital №7 m. Kyiv at Laboratory Lane, 12. In 2006, the department together with the Children’s Clinical Hospital №7 moved to a new building on the street. Upsysotsky, 4-b.

Since 1998, the department has been a support for the training of medical and medical-preventive profile specialists with and discipline «Children’s surgical dentistry» ( order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine № 317 of November 9, 1998. ).

On December 8, 2003, according to the order №123 of the rector of the NMU, the department is called – surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery of childhood.

From the date of foundation until 2016, the department was headed by a corresponding member of NAMN Ukraine, Professor, Doctor of Medical Sciences LV. Kharkiv. Since 2016, the department was headed by prof., Doctor of Medical Sciences L.M. Yakovenko – is a world-renowned dental scientist.

 

Almost all of Lyudmila Mykolayivna’s life and professional activities were connected with the University. In 1977 she graduated with honors from the Kyiv Medical Institute, worked as a senior laboratory assistant at the Department of Surgical Dentistry, while studying in absentia graduate school.

From 2006 to 2016 she worked as a professor at the department. From 2016 until the last days of life she headed the Department of Surgical Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery of Childhood.

Lyudmila Mykolayivna is the developer of a comprehensive treatment of children with congenital facial defects, neoplasms of the tissues of the DAC. Author of 261 scientific papers, including standard curricula, methodological recommendations, 30 working notebooks, 5 textbooks, 5 student-methodical manuals, 42 patents. More than 50 scientific and practical conferences took part. Scientific experience – 40 years.

Employees of the department wrote a typical program in the discipline and work curricula for students of 4 and 5 courses of the dental faculty, a program in production practice, a program of training clinical residents and graduate students.

Every year the department teaches about 700 students of 4 and 5 courses of the dental faculty, including with English-language training. The existence of a stationary and polyclinical base allows teachers to teach students the features of providing care to patients both at an outpatient reception and to see the stages of treatment of children, entering the maxillofacial department for planned operational interventions and taking direct part in the therapeutic and diagnostic process.

The work of the department consists of educational and methodical, medical and research. The bulk of the planned operational interventions in the clinic are performed by the staff of the department – on average for a year perform more than 500 planned operations, consult about 800 patients, this is 87% of all operations performed in the clinic.

 

At the clinic of the Department of Hospital №7 in 2001, the country’s only city emergency medical station is organized, where rapid specialized care is provided around the clock for children with traumatic injuries to soft tissues and jaws, inflammatory diseases of facies.

The team of the department conducts research in the main areas: diagnosis and treatment of vascular tumors of soft tissues and jaws, inflammatory processes and traumatic tissue damage of the PCT, ankylosis and secondary deforming osteoarthritis (VDOA) temporomandibular joint (TMJ), solving problems of early surgical treatment of children with congenital spines and palate (CSP ).

 

There is continued hard work on improving existing and developing new effective methods of cheilo- and uranostaphyloplasty, ways to eliminate residual and secondary defects in the palate. The principle of complexity, timeliness, effectiveness and happiness of all types of interventions is the basis for the treatment of congenital diseases in children.

 

In 2022, the textbook «Surgical dentistry and maxillofacial surgery of childhood » ( was published for the second edition of) for higher medical schools and a unique practical manual « Examination of children with surgical diseases of the maxillofacial area». These textbooks will help students of dental and pediatric faculties, interns, dentists, maxillofacial surgeons, dental surgeons, orthodontists and speech therapists to provide specialized qualified care for children of all ages.

 

To date, the department has two candidate dissertations for the title of candidate of medical sciences: « Justification of the choice of diagnostic measures and methods of surgical treatment of children with congenital unilateral spools of the upper lip», which is performed by as. Shafeta OB and «Clinical-experimental justification for immobilization of teeth in their dislocations in children », which is performed by as. Kovtun TO. It is also planned to protect two doctoral dissertations for the title of Doctor of Medical Sciences.
