Department of General Surgery №2

History

The first clinical base of the department was located in the former Pokrovsky Monastery (1934 – 1941). Surgical hospital had 120 beds and an audience for 150 people. Staff consisted of professors and senior assistant. The clinic performed surgery on the abdominal and thoracic cavity and thyroid surgery; they performed both routine and emergency operations. Status of clinical work at the clinic was on the level of surgery development of that time.
From 1953 to 1976 the Department was located in clinical hospital №9, which was near Bessarabska Square. Surgical Department was designed for 100 beds. Thyroid surgery, surgery of the gastrointestinal tract and biliary tract were widely developed here. From 1976 to the present clinical site is located in the Department of Kyiv City Clinical Hospital №3 at the address P. Zaporozhets Str., 26.

Over time the Department changed its name. Prior to 1991 it was called the “Department of Surgery of Sanitary and Hygienic Faculty, and Military Surgery”, after that, due to renaming of the Faculty, Department was called the “Department of Surgery of the Faculty of Medical and Preventive Care and Military Surgery”, and in 1994 it was called the “Department of Surgery №2 with the course of military surgery”.
Great contribution to the educational and teaching process belongs to Professor Yaroslav Yo. Kryzhanovsky. Thanks to him military surgery at the Department is taught at a high level with usage of variety of demonstrative tools.
Today Department staff develops techniques for using modern computer technologies in educational and scientific process.

HEADS OF THE DEPARTMENT


Professor Serhiy Lyk’ianovych Tymofieiev

Head of the Department in 1934-1941

Years of life: 1875 – 1943.

Doctor of Medical Sciences (1908), Professor, Founder and Head of the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology (1923 – 1932), Military Surgery (1932 – 1934) and Surgery of Sanitary and Hygienic Faculty (1934 – 1941). He graduated from Medical Faculty of Kyiv University. He is a student of M.M. Volkovych. In 1908 he defended his dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Medicine on “Pathogenesis of renal edema”. He is the author of more than 90 scientific papers on plastic of inguinal canal, osteoplasty in prseudoarthrosis, elbow nerve transfer in traumatic neuritis, laparotomy in abdominal injury, gunshot wound of bones. His students: S.T. Novytsky, A.Ya. Sheftel, A.R. Shurynok, I.T. Shevchenko and others

Borys Mykhaylovych Horodynsky, Assistant professor

Head of the Department in 1944-1953

Years of life: 1887-1969.

Head of the Department of General Surgery (1941 -1944) and Surgery of Sanitary and Hygienic Faculty (1944 – 1953). He graduated from Medical Faculty of Kyiv University ( 1913). He is a s tudent of M.B. Yukelson . He is the author of about 50 scientific papers on the problems of purulent surgery , oncology and abdominal surgery.
Works: “On pyrolic stenosis of tuberculous origin”, “S urgical treatment of large intestine ”, “ Basic principles of surgical treatment of acute osteomyelitis”.

 

Mykola Mykhaylovych Amosov, Professor

Head of the Department in 1953-1955

 Years of life: 1913-2002.

Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1969), Corresponding Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1961), Honored Worker of Science of the USSR (1959), Hero of Socialist Labor (1973), winner of the Lenin and State prize. He was Head of the Department of Surgery of Sanitary and Hygienic Faculty (1953 – 1955) and Head of Clinic of Cardiovascular Surgery in Kyiv Research Institute of Tuberculosis and Thoracic Surgery (1952 – 1968). Since 1983 – Director of the Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery. He is the author of 400 scientific works, including 17 monographs on thoracic surgery, biocybernetics, etc.

Yusyp Hosypovych Turovets, Professor

Head of the Department in 1955-1974

 Years of life: 1899-1987.

Doctor of Medical Sciences (1953), since 1953 Professor of the Department of intermediate level surgery . In 1926 he graduated from Kyiv Medical Institute. He is a student of I.A. Zavialov and A.P. Krymov. In 1951 he defended his Doctoral dissertation on “Acute suppurative complications of gunshot wounds of hip joint”. He is the author of about 100 scientific papers on various sections of general and military surgery, and oncology. A special place in his research is devoted to coagulo- and flebo-surgery, proctology, treatment of hernias, obliterating vascular diseases, cancer, peptic ulcer disease and thyroid surgery.


Ivan Denysovych Tanasienko, Professor

Head of the Department in 1974-1994

 Years of life: 1926-1998.

Doctor of Medical Sciences (1973), Professor (1975), Honored Worker of Science of the USSR, laureate of the State Prize of the USSR (1988), Dean of Medical Faculty (1972 – 1976). He graduated from Vinnytsya Medical Institute (1951). He is a student of A.L. Phakadze and M.M. Kovaliov. In 1971 he defended his Doctoral dissertation on “Clinical picture, diagnosis and surgical treatment of obstructive jaundice of nonneoplastic origin”. He is the author of about 90 scientific papers on surgery of mitral stenosis, gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer, surgery of extrahepatic bile ducts, thyroid disease and others. He implemented in practice original methods of surgical techniques and interventions. He prepared 2 Doctors and 6 Candidates of Medical Sciences.
Works: “Ways of improvement, prevention and treatment of surgical infections”, “General and Emergency Surgery” and others.


Yaroslav Yosypovych Kryzhanovsky, Professor

Head of the Department in 1994-2011

 He was born on 1932.

In 1955 he graduated from Stanislav (now Ivano-Frankivsk) Medical Institute. He is a student of O.H. Yeletsky and A.Kh. Ozerov. In 1964 he defended his Candidate’s dissertation on “Surgical treatment of congenital hip dislocation in adolescents and adults”, in 1978 – Doctor dissertation on “Surgical treatment of fractures and pseudoarthroses of the femoral neck”. Since 1981 he was Assistant Professor of the Department of Surgery of Sanitary and Hygienic Faculty, since 1984 – Professor. Since 1985 – Dean for internship, since 1994 – Head of the Department of General Surgery №2 with course in field surgery. He is the author of about 165 scientific papers on surgery of major joints, including the hip, osteoplasty, osteosynthesis in fractures and false joints of long tubular bones. He has 14 inventions and 2 patents. 4 dissertations were defended under his direction. He was the initiator and organizer of the creation of the City Centre Hip Surgery in Kyiv City Clinical Hospital №3.


Oleksandr Yuliyovych Ioffe, Professor

Head of the Department since 2011

 In 1988 he graduated from Military Medical Faculty of Kuibyshev Medical Institute ( Samara, Russia). In 1990 he completed internship in surgery in Riga, Latvia; in 1992 – with specialization in Laparoscopic Surgery in Moscow; in 2002 – training in abdominal surgery in Wurzburg , Germany; in 2007 – training in bariatric surgery in Moscow, Russia. He worked in military hospitals of Latvia, at the Department of Surgery in Luhansk State Medical University, on the position of surgeon in Mafik-Hospital ( Republic of South Africa ), in A. Shalimov National Institute of Surgery and Transplantology. In 1999 he defended his Candidate’s dissertation on “Optical biopsy in substantiation of surgical treatment of gastric ulcers”. In 2006 he defended his Doctoral dissertation on “ Justification of indications and choice of methods of surgical treatment of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease of the colon ”. Scientific and practical direction of his work is associated with laparoscopic abdominal surgery.
Surgeon of higher category, member of the Ukrainian Association of Bariatric Surgeons, a member of the World Organization of bariatric surgeons (IFSO).
